Both contextual regularity and selective attention affect the reduction of precision‐weighted prediction errors but in distinct manners
2021
Predictive coding model of perception postulates that the primary objective of the brain is to infer the causes of sensory inputs by reducing prediction errors (i.e., the discrepancy between expected and actual information). Moreover, prediction errors are weighted by their precision (i.e., inverse variance), which quantifies the degree of certainty about the variables. There is accumulating evidence that the reduction of precision‐weighted prediction errors can be affected by contextual regularity (as an external factor) and selective attention (as an internal factor). However, it is unclear whether the two factors function together or separately. Here we used electroencephalography (EEG) …
Modelling safety climate in the prediction of levels of safety activity
1998
Abstract This study examined the architecture of the relationships between components of organizational safety climate, including employee attitudes to safety issues and perceptions of the work environment, and related this to self-reported levels of safety activity. Data were collected from a large multinational manufacturing organization by questionnaire. A total of 915 valid questionnaires were returned and formed the basis for structural equation modelling and subsequent analyses. These data showed that a common structure, or architecture, of attitudes to safety issues and perceptions of the work environment could be constructed that explained levels of safety activity. The strength of …
A concept for personal wellness management based on activity monitoring
2008
Lifestyle related health problems are increasing rapidly. Many of them could be prevented or alleviated by sufficient physical activity, enough sleep, and a balanced diet. Individual citizens have the main responsibility for their own health and wellness management in their daily lives. Motivational tools based on modern technologies can support people in this task. Vivago Personal Wellness Manager (PWM) is a concept for personal wellness management, based on continuous activity monitoring with a wrist-worn device combined with immediate feedback on daily activity, e.g., sleep and physical activity. The concept allows long-term monitoring of activity patterns and includes PC software for de…
Análisis tiempo-frecuencia de la fibrilación ventricular. Estudio experimental
2006
Introduction and objectives. The analysis of frequency variability during ventricular fibrillation has yielded inconsistent results. We used an experimental model of ventricular fibrillation, with a short timescale, to analyze variations in frequency and their associated spatial distribution. Methods. Epicardial recordings of ventricular fibrillation were made in 10 perfused isolated rabbit heart preparations using a multiple electrode system (i.e., 240 unipolar electrodes). Both spectral and time-frequency analysis were used to derive the dominant frequency in the anterolateral wall of the left ventricle. Results. Linear regression analysis showed that there was a good correlation between …
Repair Mechanisms for Broadcast Transmissions in Hybrid Cellular & DVB-H Systems
2006
This paper proposes a framework for investigating potential infrastructure cost savings in hybrid cellular and DVB- H systems by performing efficient error repair of broadcast transmissions. The main idea is to reuse as much as possible the existing network infrastructure to provide mobile TV services. The cellular system is not only employed to collect information, but also to send repair data to the users whose conditions are temporarily affected by noise, interference and fading. To enable an easy and efficient implementation of the repair mechanisms we adopt the use of application layer - forward error correction (AL-FEC) with digital fountain coding.
Application Layer FEC for Mobile TV Delivery in IP Datacast Over DVB-H Systems
2009
In this paper we investigate the potential gain that can be obtained in DVB-H using application layer forward error correction (AL-FEC) to perform a multi-burst protection of the transmission for improving the reception of streaming services for mobile terminals. Compared to the conventional approach with link layer multi protocol encapsulation FEC (MPE-FEC), this technique allows to increase the robustness of the DVB-H transmission not only as a function of the capacity devoted for error repair (FEC overhead), but also as a function of the number of bursts jointly encoded. The main drawback of this approach is an increase of the network latency, that can be translated into a larger service…
An Innovative Similarity Measure for Sentence Plagiarism Detection
2016
We propose and experimentally assess Semantic Word Error Rate (SWER), an innovative similarity measure for sentence plagiarism detection. SWER introduces a complex approach based on latent semantic analysis, which is capable of outperforming the accuracy of competitor methods in plagiarism detection. We provide principles and functionalities of SWER, and we complement our analytical contribution by means of a significant preliminary experimental analysis. Derived results are promising, and confirm to use the goodness of our proposal.
A Comparative Analysis of Multiple Biasing Techniques for $Q_{biased}$ Softmax Regression Algorithm
2021
Over the past many years the popularity of robotic workers has seen a tremendous surge. Several tasks which were previously considered insurmountable are able to be performed by robots efficiently, with much ease. This is mainly due to the advances made in the field of control systems and artificial intelligence in recent years. Lately, we have seen Reinforcement Learning (RL) capture the spotlight, in the field of robotics. Instead of explicitly specifying the solution of a particular task, RL enables the robot (agent) to explore its environment and through trial and error choose the appropriate response. In this paper, a comparative analysis of biasing techniques for the Q-biased softmax …
Learning from Errors: Detecting ZigBee Interference in WiFi Networks
2014
In this work we show how to detect ZigBee interference on commodity WiFi cards by monitoring the reception errors, such as synchronization errors, invalid header formats, too long frames, etc., caused by ZigBee transmissions. Indeed, in presence of non-WiFi modulated signals, the occurrence of these types of errors follows statistics that can be easily recognized. Moreover, the duration of the error bursts depends on the transmission interval of the interference source, while the error spacing depends on the receiver implementation. On the basis of these considerations, we propose the adoption of hidden Markov chains for characterizing the behavior of WiFi receivers in presence of controlle…
