Biocide

2022

Biodeterioration represents a revealing problem for the conservation of cultural heritage. It can be identified as a complex interaction within the ecosystem of a microbial community and its substrate and involves physical and chemical alterations resulting from biological and metabolic activity. Designing a diagnostic approach for evaluating the extent of the damage, identifying the biological community, and opting for an efficient methodology aimed at eliminating deteriogens is equally complicated. The correct approach would require understanding the nature of the biodeterioration and implementing methodologies respectful of human health which, however, avoid the indiscriminate killing of…

Essential Oil Composition of Stems and Fruits of Caralluma europaea N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae)

2010

The essential oil of the stems and fruits of Caralluma europaea (Guss.) N.E.Br. (Apocynaceae) from Lampedusa Island has been obtained by hydrodistillation and its composition analyzed. The analyses allowed the identification and quantification of 74 volatile compounds, of which 16 were aromatic and 58 non-aromatic. Stems and fruits contained 1.4% and 2.7% of aromatic compounds respectively, while non-aromatic were 88.3% and 88.8%. Non-aromatic hydrocarbons were the most abundant compounds in both organs, followed by fatty acids. Data showed differences in the profiles between stems and fruits which shared only eighteen compounds; stems accounted for 38 compounds while fruits for 53. Fruits …

Volatile components from flowers of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder, C. solstitialis L., ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostàl wild growing in S…

2008

The volatile constituents of the flowerheads of Centaurea nicaeensis All., C. parlatoris Helder and C. solstitialis L. ssp. schouwii (DC.) Dostal were extracted by hydrodistillation and analysed by GC and GC-MS. Altogether 113 components were identified. Fatty acids and hydrocarbons were the most abundant components in the oils. Caryophyllene and caryophyllene oxide were the main compounds of the sesquiterpene fraction. The study on the biological activity of the oils shows no significant activity.

Brevi note sulla qualificazione giuridica dei beni costituenti la rete ferroviaria

2018

The paper synthetically describes how Italian courts and scholars interpreted the legal transformations occurred to the railway market, and notably to the rail-network infrastructure components property regulation, since the end of the twentieth century. The authors contest the (prevailing) opinion assuming a substantial continuity between the current stage of regulation and the regime of public property provided by 1942 civil code; they show the reasons why, on the contrary, the rail-network components have to be considered as goods subject to private property law both on the formal and the substantial floor. For this purpose, the paper emphasize how the public interests aimed by the previ…

Chemical Composition and Antibacterial Potential of Artemisia arborescens L. Essential Oil

2011

This study was undertaken to characterize the essential oil (EO) of Artemisia arborescens growing wild in Sicily. EO, extracted by steam distillation, was examined for its chemical composition and for its capability to inhibit some food-borne pathogen bacteria. A total of 43 compounds (13 monoterpene hydrocarbons, 14 oxygenated monoterpenes, 10 sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, three oxygenated sesquiterpenes and less amount of other three compounds), which account 93.73% of the total oil, were identified by gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Oxygenated monoterpenes (57.32%) constituted the main fraction, with β-thujone as the main compound (45.04%), followed by the sesq…

PLASMA ENDOTHELIN-1 IS ASSOCIATED WITH AORTIC STIFFNESS IN ESSENTIAL HYPERTENSION

2011

Background: Experimental studies documented that endothelin-1 (ET-1) contributes to arterial stiffness and recently, in patients with chronic kidney diseases, it has been observed that selective endothelin-A receptor antagonism reduces arterial stiffness, in part independently of blood pressure lowering. Little is known about the relationships between ET-1 plasma levels and aortic distensibility in subjects with essential hypertension. Objective: The aim of our study was to analyse the relationships between plasma concentrations of ET-1 and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (c-f PWV), as an index of aortic stiffness, in a group of hypertensive patients without overt renal insufficiency [e…

[OP.5C.05] SERUM URIC ACID IS INCREASED IN NORMOTENSIVE OBESE CHILDREN WITH A PARENTAL HYSTORY OF HYPERTENSION

2017

Objective: Increased uric acid levels are closely associated with new-onset hypertension in children, and pilot studies showed that pharmacological lowering of uric acid may reduce blood pressure (BP) in obese pediatric patients. Nevertheless, controversy remains concerning a direct causative role of serum uric acid (SUA) in the pathogenesis of essential hypertension (EH). Our study was aimed to determine if normotensive obese children and adolescent offspring of adults with EH show SUA levels different than those of pediatric subjects in whom there is non family history of EH. Design and method: Fifty-nine obese normotensive children and adolescents, attending for metabolic assessment the …

Perceived and measurable performance of daily brushing and rinsing with essential oils mouthrinse

2010

Aims. To determine whether the oral health benefits of recommending twice daily brushing and rinsing with an essential oil mouthrinse (EOM) are perceived and measurable by dentists and also perceived by their patients at a 3-month recall visit. Methods. This is a monadic, open label, uncontrolled study involving 766 generally healthy Italian subjects aged 19-66 years, with mild to moderate levels of gingivitis, no pockets of more than 4 mm, and at least 20 scorable teeth. Eight dentists scored subjects for plaque and gingivitis at baseline and at 90 days using simplified 4-point plaque and gingivitis indices. All subjects brushed twice daily, immediately followed by rinsing for 30 sec with …
