Li-ion Battery Modeling and State of Charge Estimation Method Including the Hysteresis Effect
2019
In this paper, a new approach to modeling the hysteresis phenomenon of the open circuit voltage (OCV) of lithium-ion batteries and estimating the battery state of charge (SoC) is presented. A characterization procedure is proposed to identify the battery model parameters, in particular, those related to the hysteresis phenomenon and the transition between charging and discharging conditions. A linearization method is used to obtain a suitable trade-off between the model accuracy and a low computational cost, in order to allow the implementation of SoC estimation on common hardware platforms. The proposed characterization procedure and the model effectiveness for SoC estimation are experime…
Sensor Node Network for Remote Moisture Measurement in Timber Based on Bluetooth Low Energy and Web-Based Monitoring System
2021
This paper proposes an IoT system based on wireless BLE connectivity to monitor the moisture content of wood, using a compact and low-cost moisture device that relies on a resistance measurement method valid for an ultra-wide range of resistance values. This device is digitally controlled with a BLE-incorporated micro-controller characterized by its small size and low power consumption, providing long-life battery. The proposed system consists of two main parts: first, the BLE moisture device including the moisture content measurement and wireless capability (BLE)
Real-time estimation of plasma insulin concentration from continuous glucose monitor measurements
2015
Continuous glucose monitors can measure interstitial glucose concentration in real time for closed-loop glucose control systems, known as artificial pancreas. These control systems use an insulin feedback to maintain plasma glucose concentration within a narrow and safe range, and thus to avoid health complications. As it is not possible to measure plasma insulin concentration in real time, insulin models have been used in literature to estimate them. Nevertheless, the significant interand intra-patient variability of insulin absorption jeopardizes the accuracy of these estimations. In order to reduce these limitations, our objective is to perform a real-time estimation of plasma insulin co…
Evaluating several satellite precipitation estimates and global ground-based dataset on Sicily (Italy)
2012
The developing of satellite-based precipitation retrieval systems, presents great potentialities for several ap plications ranging from weather and meteorological applications to hydrological modelling. Evaluating perfor mances for these estimates is essential in order to understand their real capabilities and suitability related to each application. In this study an evaluation analysis of satellite precipitation retrieval systems has been carried out for the area of Sicily (Italy). Sicily is an island in the Mediterranean sea with a particular climatology and morphology, which is considered as an interesting test site for satellite precipitation products on the European mid-latitude area…
A Fast GPU-Based Motion Estimation Algorithm for H.264/AVC
2012
H.264/AVC is the most recent predictive video compression standard to outperform other existing video coding standards by means of higher computational complexity. In recent years, heterogeneous computing has emerged as a cost-efficient solution for high-performance computing. In the literature, several algorithms have been proposed to accelerate video compression, but so far there have not been many solutions that deal with video codecs using heterogeneous systems. This paper proposes an algorithm to perform H.264/AVC inter prediction. The proposed algorithm performs the motion estimation, both with full-pixel and sub-pixel accuracy, using CUDA to assist the CPU, obtaining remarkable time …
STUDY OF CAPACITIVE ELECTRODES FOR REVERSE ELECTRODIALYSIS PROCESSES
2018
It has been calculated that the energy dissipated wherever the rivers get to the sea this corresponds to an amount of about 2 TW of power [1]. Recovering part of this energy could attenuate the dependency of our economic system from fossil fuels. The techniques conceived to exploit this blue energy are grouped within the family of the salinity gradient technologies, where pressure-retarded osmosis (PRO) and reverse electrodialysis (RED) are regarded as the most established technologies [2]. Nevertheless, their power is limited respectively by various factors including the kinetics of electrodes reactions. Conversely, the use of capacitive electrodes proposed by Brogioli in 2009, does not se…
Una procedura sequenziale di stima di punto di cambiamento
2008
In this paper we propose a sequential procedure for the estimation of a change-point when a change has occurred in the distribution that governs the process which generates the observations. The procedure applies whether the distribution functions involved are completely specified or they contain unknown parameters to be estimated. The procedure is based on the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test of goodness of fit, or an appropriate different test such as the chi-square test, and satisfies the optimality condition defined by the maximization of the sum of the p-values involved.
Application of Genetic Algorithm on Parameter Optimization of Three Vehicle Crash Scenarios
2017
Abstract This paper focuses on the development of mathematical models for vehicle frontal crashes. The models under consideration are threefold: a vehicle into barrier, vehicle-occupant and vehicle to vehicle frontal crashes. The first model is represented as a simple spring-mass-damper and the second case consists of a double-spring-mass-damper system, whereby the front mass and the rear mass represent the vehicle chassis and the occupant, respectively. The third model consists of a collision of two vehicles represented by two masses moving in opposite directions. The springs and dampers in the models are nonlinear piecewise functions of displacements and velocities respectively. More spec…
Dating archeological lead artifacts from measurement of the corrosion content using the voltammetry of microparticles.
2011
A methodology for dating archeological lead artifacts based on the voltammetry of microparticles is described. This methodology is based on the comparison of the height of speci¿c voltammetric features from PbO2 and PbO corrosion products formed under long-term alteration conditions. Calibration of the method was performed with the help of a series of well-documented lead pieces from the funds of di¿erent museums of the Comunitat Valenciana (Spain) covering from the ¿fth century B.C. to present day. The variation of peak currents with the time of corrosion can be¿tted to the same potential rate law as that found by Reich (R = 0.070 ( 0.005), using measurements on the Meissner fraction in th…
¿Qué conduce a un citricultor a ser "orgánico"? Evidencia empírica a partir de la citricultura española
2012
Organic farming is increasing its share of total world food output and receiving grow-ing support from policymakers concerned with agricultural sustainability issues. This paper studies the characteristics of citrus farmers in the Spanish region of Valencia that affect their probability of becoming organic farmers. A fair understanding of these characteristics may help policymakers improve the design of agricultural policies aimed at supporting organic citrus practices. As regards the methodology, a probit model is estimated with information from a sample of conventional and organic citrus farmers obtained from a survey designed for a larger research project aimed at analysing Valencian cit…
