Equilibrium in a duopoly game with homogeneous adaptive expectations and isoelastic demand
2011
In this paper we consider a non linear discrete time Cournot duopoly game with isoelastic demand and where players have homogeneous adaptive expectations. The evolution of expected outputs over time is generated by the iteration of two-dimensional map and the long-run behavior is characterized by equilibrium points which are locally stable.
Palermo-2010 conference on biogerontology
2011
We, as the guest editors, are pleased to introduce this special issue of Biogerontology, which is the outcome from the 7th European Congress of Biogerontology, held from 14th to 17th October, 2010 in Palermo, Italy. The thematic aim of the Palermo-conference was to get an overview of the present state of research in the development of effective therapies to postpone or treat human ageing, focusing on predictive medicine and prevention of age-related diseases, immunosenescence, longevity, model systems, ageing and wellness, and vaccination in the elderly. Understanding the determinants of ageing in humans in relation to the living environment and the individual life history was the additiona…
Phenotypic Aspects of Longevity
2019
Centenarians are individuals who live over the average life span characteristic of their population. The growing number of old people worldwide makes it necessary to identify a good strategy to reach healthy ageing and avoid or delay age-related diseases. The longevity phenotype is the result of a positive combination between genetic, epigenetic, stochastic and lifestyle factors. So, the analysis of all the known parameters that can influence these single elements or their interaction can give new possible elements to delineate a sort of longevity signature. Starting from the easiest biomarkers as the haematochemical values and reaching the study of molecular and cellular components, as the…
Indicators and measures for the assessment of university students’ careers
2011
In the Italian University System the problem of student failure and of delaying the degree is causing increasing concern both for universities and for stakeholders. In this paper we compare the teaching performances of the italian universities, and individual cohort data of three Faculties of the University of Palermo, to extract some information useful to policy makers.
Discrete Time Portfolio Selection with Lévy Processes
2007
This paper analyzes discrete time portfolio selection models with Lévy processes. We first implement portfolio models under the hypotheses the vector of log-returns follow or a multivariate Variance Gamma model or a Multivariate Normal Inverse Gaussian model or a Brownian Motion. In particular, we propose an ex-ante and an ex-post empirical comparisons by the point of view of different investors. Thus, we compare portfolio strategies considering different term structure scenarios and different distributional assumptions when unlimited short sales are allowed.
Opinioni degli studenti e norme anticovid
2021
In this chapter, the results of a research on young people's opinions and attitudes towards anticovid rules are presented. The respondents were asked to answer the following question: "What is your opinion about f the measures taken by the government to combat the spread of the coronavirus?" The answers were subjected to a double analysis.
Optimisation des requêtes de similarité dans les espaces métriques répondant aux besoins des usagers
2012
The complexity of data stored in large databases has increased at very fast paces. Hence, operations more elaborated than traditional queries are essential in order to extract all required information from the database. Therefore, the interest of the database community in similarity search has increased significantly. Two of the well-known types of similarity search are the Range (Rq) and the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNNq) queries, which, as any of the traditional ones, can be sped up by indexing structures of the Database Management System (DBMS). Another way of speeding up queries is to perform query optimization. In this process, metrics about data are collected and employed to adjust the par…
Cannabis Use and Social Anxiety in Adolescence: The Role of Facilitation Expectancies
2015
Cannabis use is frequently related to social anxiety in young adulthood, but the nature of this relationship is unclear. Moreover, much research has been conducted on the role of cannabis effects expectancies and their relationship to social anxiety among young adults, but less is known about adolescence. The study examined the relationship between social anxiety, cannabis use patterns, and cannabis effects expectancies among a nonclinical sample of 1,305 adolescents (51% female). Non-users reported higher social anxiety scores than non-problematic and risky users. Compared to users, non-users had more negative expectancies. Risky and problematic users showed higher social and sexual facili…
Children’s beliefs concerning school transition
2016
This study examines preschoolers’ beliefs concerning their transfer into primary education. Data from 1386 Finnish preschoolers were obtained using interviews with parents at the end of the children’s preschool year. The qualitative content analysis revealed categories, which encompassed peer relationships, relationship with teacher, learning, formal schoolwork, informal activities, comfortable school entry and no concerns. The results indicated that children’s beliefs concerning their prospective school entry centred on maintaining and making friendships, and that children possessed both negative and positive expectations about their relationship with their future teacher. Both girls and b…
Personal Savings and Investments in the Financial Market
2021
After 1998, CEE countries underwent an extensive reform process toward compliance with the new political, economic, and sociodemographic conditions. Reduced birth rate, increased life expectancy, and migration are challenges for PAYG public pension systems, which are directly dependent on the labor market and funding based on social security contributions paid by all earners and other wage earners. This chapter aims to give a socioeconomic perspective regarding personal saving, through various instruments offered by the banking and capital market, to supplement the financial resources of the elderly during retirement.
