Reconciling open charm production at the Fermilab Tevatron with QCD

2005

We study the inclusive hadrodroduction of D^0, D^+, D^{*+}, and D_s^+ mesons at next-to-leading order in the parton model of quantum chromodynamics endowed with universal non-perturbative fragmentation functions (FFs) fitted to e^+e^- annihilation data from CERN LEP1. Working in the general-mass variable-flavor-number scheme, we resum the large logarithms through the evolution of the FFs and, at the same time, retain the full dependence on the charm-quark mass without additional theoretical assumptions. In this way, the cross section distributions in transverse momentum recently measured by the CDF Collaboration in run II at the Fermilab Tevatron are described within errors.

R&D alliances timing under uncertainty: from theory toward experiments

2015

There is a growing awareness that managers have cognitive biases when making investments decisions under uncertainty. There is evidence of deviation from the predictions derived using normative models, such as real options models. The proposed research sheds light on the importance of integrating normative models with experimental methods in order to predict and explain such cognitive limitations. To this aim, starting from a real options model dealing with alliance timing decisions, we propose a simple design of an experiment, that can been used to test some of the fundamental insights of real options theory in the context of R&D alliances.

Analysis of local scour downstream of bed sills: preliminary results of an experimental work

2006

Bed sills are often used to limit bed degradation, to control bed erosion around bridge piers or downstream stilling basins of dams. In this paper, the local scour that takes place downstream of the bed sill, in addition to the general erosion process, is examined. The data collected during experimental work are used to analyse the applicability of the relationship found in the literature and to define the relation between the maximum scour depth and the flow rate.

Un’indagine sperimentale sul ruolo della temperatura am- biente nel processo di riscaldamento/raffreddamento per ir- raggiamento

2012

The process of heating / cooling of an object in vacuum can be studied by the known Stefan's law. Many studies have investigated this phenomenon without inquire the role of the environment and of its temperature. In this paper the author proposes an experimental method through which to study the above process, by monitoring the ambient temperature on the assumption that this can vary with an exponential law. Under this hypothesis, in defined conditions, the temporal evolution of cooling of the object is similar to the case where the con- vection and / or the conduction are the principale phenomenon of energy exchange.

L'Orchestra di Auschwitz. Inchiesta su Alma Rosé

2023

Settore L-ART/07 - Musicologia E Storia Della MusicaThe book is an investigation into the life and time of Alma Rosé (1906-1944) granddaughter of Gustav Mahler debutant and fashionable girl between the twenties and thirties of the last century violinist whose talent matures – paradoxically – while the shadow of Nazism unfolds over Europe and finally director of the Auschwitz orchestra. at a time when the career of the conductor was declined only to men. Arriving at Auschwitz in the summer of 1943 and first assigned to the Block of medical experiments Alma managed in a short time to become – in the small terrible world of the Lager – a kind of celebrity: and it is in those darknesss moreover that the final act of the drama takes place that is the mysterious death and without a reason of the protagonist.

'L'ADAMO, OVVERO IL MONDO CREATO' DI TOMMASO CAMPAILLA. UN CONTRIBUTO AL RINNOVAMENTO DELLA CULTURA SCIENTIFICA E LETTERARIA IN SICILIA

2022

Settore L-FIL-LET/10 - Letteratura ItalianaThe article analyzes L'Adamo ovvero il Mondo creato a scientific-philosophical poem by Tommaso Campailla (1668-1740) a Modican academic who participated with his scientific experiments and his literary work to spread the Cartesian philosophy and the new wonderful discoveries in every field of knowledge. In his poem Campailla he uses the traditional motif of the journey of knowledge to square the extraordinary wonders of creation to the First Man Adam attempting a synthesis between scientific instances and new directions of eighteenth-century poetry.

Design and analysis of discrete choice experiments for models with response time

2013

Settore SECS-S/02 - Statistica Per La Ricerca Sperimentale E TecnologicaA sector of conjoint analysis (experimental design in marketing research) is made of the so called choice experiments. In choice experiments respondents undergo a questionnaire which is nowadays mostly submitted through the internet. The questionnaire proposes to the respondent a sequence of choice sets each one including two or more profiles being a profile a specific combination of attribute levels. The respondent selects the preferred profile for each choice set. Responses given by a sample of respondents are analysed through suitable methods aimed to eventually find the best combination of attribute levels. One method of analysis adopts the Multinomial Logit (MLN) model. In this article the authors show the results of the MLN analysis compared with another model of analysis which uses an additional response which can be easily recorded by electronically submitted questionnaires. In practice modern survey platforms like “Qualtrics” (the one used for this work) can record the so called “response latency” i.e. the time taken by the respondent to make the choice and select the most preferred profile in the choice set. Thanks to a response latency model further refined in this work it is possible to deduce the relative weight of importance of the profiles for each choice set and respondent. This type of response can be used in place of the dichotomous choice variable in the MLN model. The two models and methods of analysis are deeply compared and it is critically discussed when it is better to use one or the other method. As a result a more reliable estimate of the optimal profile comes up implying lower risks for new investments and marketing decisions.

Computer experiments combined with physical Experiments: two experiences in product development

2012

Physical experiments in industrial product development are often very expensive but also necessary sometimes even for safety reasons (think about the crash tests in the automotive industry conducted with new and completely equipped vehicles). Therefore there is a pressing need to reduce this cost as much as possible. Computer experiments may be a viable solution provided that their results are reliable as much as the physical ones. In most of the cases, computer experiments are opportunely combined with physical experiments and the recipe of such mix is interesting itself. In this presentation we will show two cases of combination of physical and computer experiments in product development.…

Search for Isovector Valence-Shell Excitations in 140 Nd and 142 Sm via Coulomb excitation reactions of radioactive ion beams

2018

Projectile Coulomb excitation experiments were performed at HIE-ISOLDE at CERN with the radioactive ion beams of 140Nd and 142Sm. Ions with an energy of 4:62 MeV/A were impinging on a 1.45 mg/cm2 thick 208Pb target. The γ-rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL and scattered particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector. Experimental intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. A preliminary result of the B(M1; 2+3 → 2+1) of 140Nd and an upper limit for the case of 142Sm are revealing the main fragments of the proton-neutron mixed-symmetry 2+1;ms states.
