Strength training exercises are essential for rehabilitation, improving our health as well as in sports. For optimal and safe training, educators and trainers in the industry should comprehend exercise form or technique. Currently, there is a lack of tools measuring in-depth skills of strength training experts. In this study, we investigate how data mining methods can be used to identify novel and useful skill patterns from a binary multiple choice questionnaire test designed to measure the knowledge level of strength training experts. A skill test assessing exercise technique expertise and comprehension was answered by 507 fitness professionals with varying backgrounds. A triangulated appr…
Studies on the Effectiveness of Multispectral Images for Face Recognition: Comparative Studies and New Approaches
2013
In this paper, we investigate face recognition in unconstrained illumination conditions. A twofold contribution is proposed: First, three state of the art algorithms, namely Multiblock Local Binary Pattern (MBLBP), Histogram of Gabor Phase Patterns (HGPP) and Local Gabor Binary Pattern Histogram Sequence (LGBPHS) are challenged against the IRIS-M3 multispectral face data base to evaluate their robustness against high illumination variation. Second, we propose to enhance the Performance of the three mentioned algorithms, which has been drastically decreased because of the non-monotonic illumination variation that distinguishes the IRIS-M3 face database. Instead of the usual braod band images…
Knowledge Acquisition Based on Semantic Balance of Internal and External Knowledge
1999
This paper presents a strategy to handle incomplete knowledge during acquisition process. The goal of this research is to develop formal tools that benefit the law of semantic balance. The assumption is used that a situation inside the object’s boundary in some world should be in balance with a situation outside it. It means that continuous cognition of an object aspires to a complete knowledge about it and knowledge about internal structure of the object will be in balance with knowledge about relationships of the object with other objects in its environment. It is supposed that one way to discover incompleteness of knowledge about some object is to measure and compare knowledge about its …
Sectors on sectors (SonS): A new hierarchical clustering visualization tool
2011
Clustering techniques have been widely applied to extract information from high-dimensional data structures in the last few years. Graphs are especially relevant for clustering, but many graphs associated with hierarchical clustering do not give any information about the values of the centroids' attributes and the relationships among them. In this paper, we propose a new visualization approach for hierarchical cluster analysis in which the above-mentioned information is available. The method is based on pie charts. The pie charts are divided into several pie segments or sectors corresponding to each cluster. The radius of each pie segment is proportional to the number of patterns included i…
<title>Dynamic integration of multiple data mining techniques in a knowledge discovery management system</title>
1999
One of the most important directions in improvement of data mining and knowledge discovery, is the integration of multiple classification techniques of an ensemble of classifiers. An integration technique should be able to estimate and select the most appropriate component classifiers from the ensemble. We present two variations of an advanced dynamic integration technique with two distance metrics. The technique is one variation of the stacked generalization method, with an assumption that each of the component classifiers is the best one, inside a certain sub area of the entire domain area. Our technique includes two phases: the learning phase and the application phase. During the learnin…
Coarse to fine : toward an intelligent 3D acquisition system
2015
International audience; The 3D acquisition-compression-processing chain is , most of the time , sequenced into independent stages. As resulting , a large amount of 3D points are acquired whatever the geometry of the object and the processing to be done in further steps. It appears , particularly in mechanical part 3D modeling and in CAD , that the acquisition of such an amount of data is not always mandatory. We propose a method aiming at minimizing the number of 3D points to be acquired with respect to the local geometry of the part and therefore to compress the cloud of points during the acquisition stage. The method we propose is based on a new coarse to fine approach in which from a coa…
Periodic Variance Maximization using Generalized Eigenvalue Decomposition applied to Remote Photoplethysmography estimation
2018
International audience; A generic periodic variance maximization algorithm to extract periodic or quasi-periodic signals of unknown periods embedded into multi-channel temporal signal recordings is described in this paper. The algorithm combines the notion of maximizing a periodicity metric combined with the global optimization scheme to estimate the source periodic signal of an unknown period. The periodicity maximization is performed using Generalized Eigenvalue Decomposition (GEVD) and the global optimization is performed using tabu search. A case study of remote photoplethysmography signal estimation has been utilized to assess the performance of the method using videos from public data…
Diversity in random subspacing ensembles
2004
Ensembles of learnt models constitute one of the main current directions in machine learning and data mining. It was shown experimentally and theoretically that in order for an ensemble to be effective, it should consist of classifiers having diversity in their predictions. A number of ways are known to quantify diversity in ensembles, but little research has been done about their appropriateness. In this paper, we compare eight measures of the ensemble diversity with regard to their correlation with the accuracy improvement due to ensembles. We conduct experiments on 21 data sets from the UCI machine learning repository, comparing the correlations for random subspacing ensembles with diffe…
Student Performance Prediction Based on Blended Learning
2021
Contribution: This article explored blended learning by implementing a student-centered teaching method based on the flipped classroom and small private online course (SPOC). The impact of general online learning behavior on student performance was analyzed. This work is practical and provides enlightenment for learning analysis and individualized teaching in blended learning. Background: Providing individualized teaching in a large class is an effective way to improve teaching quality, but the traditional teaching method makes it difficult for teachers to learn about each student’s learning situation. Blended learning offers the possibility of individualized teaching for teachers. The comb…
