A randomized multicenter study comparing seawater washes and carmellose artificial tears eyedrops in the treatment of dry eye syndrome.

2019

Purpose To investigate the safety and efficacy of sterile isotonic seawater washes vs standard treatment with carmellose artificial tears in dry eye syndrome (DES). Patients and methods This is a randomized multicenter prospective study with 12 weeks of follow-up. A group of patients with DES (N=60) were treated with seawater spray (Quinton®) five times daily, and another similar group (N=60) were treated with carmellose artificial tears eyedrops (Viscofresh® 0.5%) five times a day. The parameters studied and measured were as follows: Ocular Surface Disease Index questionnaire score, Schirmer I test (without anesthesia) score, tear osmolarity (TearLab®), tear breakup time, tear meniscus hei…

Development of a Textile Nanocomposite as Naked Eye Indicator of the Exposition to Strong Acids

2017

[EN] Chemical burns, mainly produced by acids, are a topic of concern. A new sensing material for the detection of strong acids able to be incorporated into textiles has been developed. The material is prepared by the covalent attachment of 2,2 ',4,4 ',4 ''-pentamethoxy triphenyl methanol to a mesoporous material which further is included in a nitro resin to obtain a colourless composite. The response of this composite to diverse acid solutions was tested showing the appearance of an intense purple colour (with a colour difference higher than 160) that can be monitored by the naked eye or could be easily digitised to feed an instrumental sensor. Reversibility and resistance to washing cycle…

Analysis of the antibody repertoire in tears of dry-eye patients.

2001

<i>Purpose:</i> It has recently been suggested that dry-eye disease has an underlying autoimmune mechanism. This hypothesis is further supported by the successful treatment of the disease with immunomodulatory drugs such as cyclosporin A. Although it is known that tears contain antibodies, very little is known about the antibody repertoires in tears. It was the aim of this study to analyze the IgA antibody repertoire against ocular antigens in the tears of patients suffering from dry-eye disease and compare it to those of healthy volunteers. <i>Methods:</i> Two groups were examined: 20 healthy volunteers (controls) and 28 patients suffering from dry-eye disease. The …

Influence of different approaches to the cerebellopontine angle on the function of the intermediate nerve

2007

Object Surgery in the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a standard procedure at many centers. Outcome is focused mainly on preservation of hearing and facial function postoperatively. The nonmotor part of the facial nerve, the intermediate nerve, is nearly neglected nowadays. Methods A retrospective study was designed, including a questionnaire that was sent to 178 patients who had undergone surgery between 2000 and 2004. Data were obtained in 156 cases. The questionnaire was divided into five parts assessing the presence of increased tearing, reduced tearing, salivation disturbances, increased nasal secretions, and abnormalities in taste. Finally, a self-assessment of patient symptoms was a…

Indocyanine Green Angiography in Congenital Hypertrophy of the Retinal Pigment Epithelium

2017

PURPOSE To report a case of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium followed up for 7 years showing features not previously reported. METHODS A complete fundus examination including fluorescein angiography was performed at first examination and at follow-up. RESULTS The area of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium presented morphologic changes, showing enlargement of the lesion on one side associated with partial regression on another side. In addition, the indocyanine green angiography findings revealed that this test was more useful than fluorescein angiography to delineate the real boundaries of the lesion and disclosed hypofluorescent areas inside th…

Interactions among co-infecting parasite species: a mechanism maintaining genetic variation in parasites?

2008

Individuals of free-living organisms are often infected simultaneously by a community of parasites. If the co-infecting parasites interact, then this can add significantly to the diversity of host genotype×parasite genotype interactions. However, interactions between parasite species are usually not examined considering potential variation in interactions between different strain combinations of co-infecting parasites. Here, we examined the importance of interactions between strains of fish eye flukes Diplostomum spathaceum and Diplostomum gasterostei on their infectivity in naive fish hosts. We assessed the infection success of strains of both species in single-strain exposures and in co-…

Application of action camera video for fast and low-cost photogrammetric survey of cultural heritage

2022

Abstract. The research work focuses on the growing of fast and low-cost data surveying methods (both in the acquisition and processing phases), to be used mainly as a support for the management and enhancement of architectural heritage. Attention is paid on the diffusion of action cameras, characterized by wide-angle lenses and 4K video shooting, with more and more affordable prices and on the elaboration of the data with photogrammetry software. The high-resolution videos captured by these tools, in fact, allow the selection of frames characterized by sufficient overlap, necessary for point cloud generation through Structure for Motion (SfM) processes. The focus is on indoor environment ch…

Dažādu metožu salīdzinājums sausās acs ārstēšanā

2021

Tear production and intraocular pressure values in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (<i>Cygnus cygnus</i>)

2018

The objective of this study was to determine the normal range of tear production and values of intraocular pressure (IOP) in clinically normal eyes of whooper swans (Cygnus cygnus). A total of 86 birds: 81 cygnets (6-10 weeks old) and 5 moulting - adult swans (3-6 years old) were examined in this study. Both eyes of all birds underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, including evaluation of tear production with the phenol red thread test (PRTT) and the assessment of the IOP by rebound tonometry, employing the TonoVet® device. The mean ± standard deviation of PRTT values were as follows: all cygnets (81) 22.59±3.48 mm/15s, male cygnets (45) 22.64±3.54 mm/15s, female cygnets (36) 22.53±3.4…
