Implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) is a reversible refractive procedure, preserving the patient’s accommodative function with minimal induction of higher order aberrations compared with corneal photoablative procedures. Despite this, as an intraocular procedure, it has potential risks such as cataracts, chronic uveitis, pupil ovalization, corneal endothelial cell loss, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, pupillary block glaucoma, astigmatism, or endophthalmitis. Acute effects of low doses of methyl parathion on human EEG.

Abstract Biological monitoring of workers exposed to organophosphates consists mainly of measuring serum or erythrocyte cholinesterase activity. However, animal experiments and a field study suggest that quantitative analysis of EEG may be more sensitive. In a parallel group design, 25 farmers were investigated, spraying methyl parathion or water for 50 min. EEG was recorded before and after spraying. Serum and erythrocyte cholinesterase activity was compared with intraindividual pre-exposure values. Plasma methyl parathion concentrations ranged up to 12.1 μg/l, methyl paraoxon was not detectable. (2) This extinction does not apply to all the polarized light, but only a certain amount of it, this may be concluded from the fact that in the former experiments the strength of vision in no case became zero. (3) Probably the analysator in the eye ofEupagurus functions as an extinguisher of the disturbing polarized light, for the sunlight reflected from the surface of water is polarized to an ample extent.
Lobster eye optics for nano-satellite x-ray monitor

The Lobster eye design for a grazing incidence X-ray optics provides wide field of view of the order of many degrees, for this reason it would be a convenient approach for the construction of space X-ray monitors. In this paper, we compare previously reported measurements of prototype lobster eye X-ray optics called P-25 with computer simulations and discuss differences between the theoretical end experimentally obtained results. Usability of this prototype lobster eye and manufacturing technology for the nano-satellite mission is assessed. The specific scientific goals are proposed.
Tests of Lobster Eye Optics for Small Space X-ray Telescope

Abstract The Lobster eye design for a grazing incidence X-ray optics provides wide field of view of the order of many degrees, for this reason it can be a convenient approach for the construction of space all-sky X-ray monitors. We present preliminary results of tests of prototype lobster eye X-ray optics in quasi parallel beam full imaging mode conducted using the 35 m long X-ray beam-line of INAF-OAPA in Palermo (Italy). X-ray images at the focal plane have been taken with a microchannel plate (MCP) detector at several energy values from 0.3 to 8 keV. The gain, the field of view and the angular resolution have been measured and compared with theoretical values.

Analytical description of lobster eye and similar multi-foil optics

Analytical equations describing lobster eye optical parameters on dependence on its geometric parameters are presented. The paper partially gives review of main previously known results. At next, the paper gives new results discussing parameters, that were not included to previously published models but may be significant. The results are applicable for a Schmidt as well as for an Angel lobster eye and for some related multi-foil systems.
Detection of wave aberrations in the human eye using a retinoscopy-like technique

The influence of optical aberrations on the retinoscopic reflex is theoretically analyzed from a geometrical point of view. The relationship between the wave aberrations to the ray aberrations is applied to explain the appearance of the retinoscopic patterns for different types of ocular aberrations. Several schematic models of the human eye are tested numerically, showing that a careful retinoscopic examination can detect the usual eye aberrations.

AbstractVisual systems can undergo striking adaptations to specific visual environments during evolution, but they can also be very “conservative.” This seems to be the case in motion vision, which is surprisingly similar in species as distant as honeybee and goldfish. In both visual systems, motion vision measured with the optomotor response is color blind and mediated by one photoreceptor type only. Here, we ask whether this is also the case if the moving stimulus is restricted to a small part of the visual field, and test what influence velocity may have on chromatic motion perception. Differential electrodermal and phasic heart rate responses to personally relevant information: Comparing sleep and wakefulness

This study examined autonomic physiological responses to personally relevant information presented during sleep and wakefulness. Heart rate and electrodermal reactions to subjects’ own first name and other first names were measured during sleep stage 2, rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and wakefulness. Across all conditions, larger skin conductance responses were elicited by subjects’ own first name. During REM sleep, personally relevant information led to larger heart rate acceleration, whereas an enhanced deceleration was examined during wakefulness.
