Libanio tra attualità e tradizione. L’orazione IX

2022

Libanius’ speech IX reveals the persistence in Libanius of the interest in the religious dimension, free from the polemical tones adopted elsewhere. A global cosmic perspective pervades the speech. The Kalendae Ianuarie festival, marking the beginning of the new year, was a parenthesis of joy and carefreeness for all the inhabitants of the empire, regardless of their religious beliefs. The relevance of this anniversary as a vehicle of imperial ideology for the unity of the empire could explain Theodosius’ rescript of 389 to the praefectus Urbis Romae Albinus on the legal calendar of Rome, which, including not only Easter, but also the Kalendae, would have surprised Libanius himself first. T…

2022

In the grammar of rituals described in Vedic texts, the swing was an object whose meanings referred to the propitiation of fertility and solar symbolism. Although its use remains in various contemporary festive contexts, its meaning has been differently defined. By analyzing the passages from works belonging to the ancient religious literature, this article examines the description of the swing’s construction and the rite performed on it by the officiant named hotr. Such an approach allows us to focus on the symbolic elements related to the swing in one of the focal points of the sequence of the mahavrata ceremony. Through a diachronic investigation and considering the data from the compara…

Spettacoli e feste popolari in Sicilia

2021

2017

In 1945, writing about the procession of Our Lady of Viggiano, Carlo Levi presents us a peasant world characterized by archaic beliefs and ritual practices, another world « where seasons run on peasant fatigue, [...] like three thousand years before Christ », a world « veiled with black veils, fiery and earthly [...] which you do not enter without a key of magic ». If that other world of the peasants seems to have come to an end today, the beliefs, practices and ritual symbols of reputed “pre-Christian” precedence or in any case alien to the official liturgy, as witnessed by Levi and many other narrators and demoanthropologists from the 19th and 20th century are not, however, definitively l…

Pani cerimoniali e tavole rituali in Sicilia

2019

Essi presentano peculiari morfologie e vengono prepara…

Live and online music festivals in the COVID-19 era: analysis of motivational differences and value perceptions

2022

Purpose – This research has three objectives: to identify whether there are motivational differences between attending live and online music festivals, to know whether these motivations vary according to the sociodemographic characteristics of the attendees, and to analyse the perceived value-satisfaction-behavioural intention chain for both types of festivals. Theoretical framework – We base our research on push and pull factor theory of motivations. We analyse push motivational factors behind participation in live and online music festivals. Push factors are psychological benefits that individuals perceive they will gain from attending events, such as entertainment, socialization and esca…

Accessible film festivals: a pilot study

2020

This work provides an overview of the state of accessibility at film festivals all over the world, identifies its selected audiences and also encourages innovative solutions in relation to linguistic and technical issues emerged during the processes of subtitling. The outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 has resulted in many film festivals all over the world being either cancelled, postponed or moved to online platforms. What has arisen is the question whether and to what extent people with sensorial disabilities, in particular deaf and hard-of-hearing and blind and visually impaired people, have been left behind or have been part of projects of inclusion. The accessibility of forms of…

A tale of two palaces and a city: Valencia, 1238-1460

2013

Aunque ambos palacio…
