Macchina del fango e demonizzazione dell’avversario. Sulla nozione di diabole nella retorica greca.
2014
The topic of this paper is the rhetorical notion of diabole: a charge that attempts to cast the opponent in a negative light in order to create a negative prejudice in the audience. It is a rhetorical strategy similar to what is currently called a “character assassination” (in Italian “macchina del fango”), a strategy aimed at discrediting and vilifying the adversary using any means. Therefore, it is a phenomenon that involves the important question concerning the role of ethos in the persuasive process. The paper focuses on a particularly insidious aspect of diabole: its use as a form of counterattack. This means that diabole can be dangerous not only when it is used to discredit or vilify…
Conversazioni umane e artificiali
2023
Chreod.
2020
The concept of chreod was introduced in 1957 by the English theoretical biologist Conrad Hal Waddington (cf. Waddington: 1957; Galperin: 2008). From a linguistic point of view, the word “chreod” is a neologism, or, more precisely, a compound formed by the combination of two Greek words: the verb chre- (“it is necessary, must”) and the substantive -hodos (“way, road”). Therefore, it means literally “obliged pathway” (cf. Fabris 2018: 252, n. 6). Of course, such an etymology covers only a little bit of the semantic repertoire deployed by chreod. But, it is however true that some aspects of the biology of living systems can be described in these terms. Indeed, at the most general level, the id…
El Concepto de transfinitud en García Bacca
2011
This paper presents the notion of transfinite developed by García Bacca in his «Infinito, transfinito, finito». This concept is a reaction to the Aristotelian concepts of «nature» and «finite», making man a historical being. García Bacca argues that man has lost his nature and his finitude through technology. So, strictly speaking, is not finite, nor infinite.

Figure di città. Spazi urbani e discorsi sociali
2013
How to be a critical but reasonable debater: Suggestions for critically addressing pseudoscientists and other similar groups
2018
Discourse about pseudoscience usually accompanies dialogue about science. Despite attempts to separate the two domains, people still rely on pseudoscientific remedies. The ease with which beliefs become contagious, the popularity of certain products, and the verbiage of their sellers often leave us in the hands of so-called experts. Although the scientific method can help us to prove the ineffectiveness of certain remedies, we do not always have conclusive arguments to dispel doubts, and so we are left at the mercy of supposed technical knowledge or false scientific rigour. Faced with this, we must resort to critical thinking to respond to alleged experts and conduct ourselves reasonably.
