Methanotrophy induces nitrogen fixation during peatland development

Significance In peatlands, the external sources of nitrogen are mainly atmospheric, but the atmospheric nitrogen deposition alone cannot explain the long-term annual nitrogen accumulation rates to these ecosystems. Because of methodological problems, methane-induced fixation of atmospheric dinitrogen gas has been previously overlooked as an additional nitrogen input mechanism. We found that the activity of methane-oxidizing bacteria provides not only carbon but also nitrogen to peat mosses and, thus, contributes to carbon and nitrogen accumulation in peatlands, which store approximately one-third of the global soil carbon pool. Solids and Hydraulic Retention Time Effect on N2O Emission from Moving-Bed Membrane Bioreactors

Biological nutrient removal was operated at different solids (SRT) and hydraulic retention times (HRT) in order to assess their influence on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from a hybrid moving-bed membrane bioreactor. The observed results show that the N2O production decreased when the SRT/HRT was decreased. The maximum N2O gaseous concentration was measured in the aerobic reactor at the end of phase I, and it decreased through phases II and III. From mass balances over the reactors of the system, the aerated (aerobic and membrane) reactors were the largest producers of N2O, showing that the greater part of N2O was produced during the nitrification process.

Invasional meltdown via horizontal gene transfer of a European symbiosis island variant in North American nodule symbionts of Cytisus scoparius

New data from sites in Spain, Sicily and North America establish that the spread of the European legume Cytisus scoparius (Scotch broom) across North America involved the concurrent invasion of a European mobile genetic element (symbiosis island [SI]) into North American Bradyrhizobium nodule bacteria. At four SI loci, bacteria from nine C. scoparius populations across the continent were all identical to haplotypes present in European Bradyrhizobium strains. At seven non-symbiotic (housekeeping) loci, these American C. scoparius bacteria grouped into eight diverse lineages related to, or in some cases identical to, symbionts from several native North American legumes. Polarization shaping for unidirectional rotational motion of molecules.

2015

Control of the orientation of the angular momentum of linear molecules is demonstrated by means of laser polarization shaping. For this purpose, we combine two orthogonally polarized and partially time-overlapped femtosecond laser pulses so as to produce a spinning linear polarization which in turn induces unidirectional rotation of N2 molecules. The evolution of the rotational response is probed by a third laser beam that can be either linearly or circularly polarized. The physical observable is the frequency shift imparted to the probe beam as a manifestation of the angular Doppler effect. Asymptotic freedom in massive Yang-Mills theory

An effective field theory model of the massive Yang-Mills theory is considered. Assuming that the renormalized coupling constants of 'non-renormalizable' interactions are suppressed by a large scale parameter it is shown that in analogy to the non-abelian gauge invariant theory the dimensionless coupling constant vanishes logarithmically for large values of the renormalization scale parameter.

What can be learned from the rotational motion of single molecules in a polymer melt near the glass transition?

We develop a framework for the interpretation of single-molecule (SM) spectroscopy experiments of probe dynamics in a complex glass-forming system. Specifically, from molecular dynamics simulations of a single probe molecule in a coarse-grained model of a polymer melt, we show the emergence of sudden large angular reorientations (SLARs) of the SM as the mode coupling critical temperature is closely approached. Poiseuille flow of a Quincke suspension

The controversy of models of dielectric particle suspensions with antisymmetric stress, which predict a nonphysical cusp of the velocity profile in plane Poiseuille flow under the action of the electrical field, is resolved. In the mean-field approximation, the nonlinear kinetic equation is derived for coupled due to the flow translational and rotational motion of the particles. By its numerical solution, it is shown that the velocity profile is smeared due to the translational diffusion of the particles with opposite directions of rotation.
