Electron Microscopic Contrast of the Cytoskeleton and Junctional Complexes of Intestinal Epithelial Cells by Ethanolic Phosphotungstic Acid

2000

After glutaraldehyde fixation and treatment with ethanolic phosphotungstic acid (E-PTA) before plastic embedding, sections of rat large intestine showed a characteristic electron contrasting pattern in epithelial cells. The axis of microvilli, terminal web, a thin band below the luminal plasma membrane, centrioles and junctional complexes (tight junctions, adherens junctions, and desmosomes) appeared highly contrasted. In addition to protein components of microfilaments and intermediate filaments, proteins from the junctional complexes could also be implicated in the contrasting reaction with E-PTA. Mitochondrial membranes, chromatin masses, and nucleoli of enterocytes showed considerable e…

Comparison of transflection and transmission FTIR imaging measurements performed on differentially fixed tissue sections

2015

The widespread and cost-effective use of transflection substrates in Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging of clinical samples is affected by the presence of artefacts including the electric field standing wave (EFSW) and contributions from light dispersion. For IR-based diagnostics, the manifestation of undesirable artifacts can distort the spectra and lead to erroneous diagnosis. Nevertheless, there is no clear consensus in the literature about the degree of influence of these effects. The aim of this work is to contribute to this discussion by comparing transflection and transmission images of the same tissue. For this purpose two adjacent sections of the same tissue (lymphoma sample…

Search for anomalous top-quark couplings with the D0 detector

2008

Anomalous Wtb couplings modify the angular correlations of the top quark decay products and change the single top quark production cross section. We present limits on anomalous top quark couplings by combining information from W boson helicity measurements in top quark decays and anomalous coupling searches in the single top quark final state. We set limits on right-handed vector couplings as well as left-handed and right-handed tensor couplings based on about 1fb^-1 of data collected by the D0 experiment.

Type II Odontoid Fracture: a case series highlighting the treatment strategies

2019

Background: A type II odontoid fracture, if unstable, can cause spinal cord damage. In this case, it is essential to choose the correct treatment—but the issues of what the correct treatment is and which of the different surgical options is best are quite controversial. In this paper we present strategies for treatment of type II odontoid fracture. Materials and Methods: Thirty consecutive cases of type II odontoid fracture were treated at the Division of Neurosurgery at Villa Sofia Hospital in Palermo (23 cases) and at the Neurosurgical Clinic, University Hospital of Palermo (seven cases), from January 2011 to August 2016. Four patients were treated with external immobilization. Twenty-six…

Existence theorems for inclusions of the type

1999

For a family of operator inclusions with convex closed-valued right-hand sides in Banach spaces, the existence of solutions is obtained by chiefly using Ky Fan's fixed point principle. The main result of the paper improves Theorem 1 in [16] as well as Theorem 2.2 of [3]. Some meaningful concrete cases are also presented and discussed.

Eccentric fixation measurements using visuoscopy and Macula Integrity Tester (MIT) in children with amblyopia

2021

The aim of the work was to compare measurements of eccentric fixation in children with amblyopia using two different methods, a traditional visuoscopy and MIT. Monocular fixation was evaluated using visuoscopy and MIT in 16 patients (from 5 to 9 years old). Measurements were started with the better seeing eye to compare the results obtained with the amblyopic eye. All study participants were selected with anisometropic and refractive amblyopia. Visuoscopy is simpler than MIT and less dependent on patient responses, so visioscopy can be used for young children who have not yet acquired verbal skills. Children over the age of 5 can more easily understand the MIT method and get more reliable r…

Innovative Compact Solar Air Conditioner based on Fixed and Cooled Adsorption Beds and Wet Heat Exchangers

2014

Abstract In this work, a new all-in-one compact solar air conditioner concept is presented. The system is mainly based on a new DEC process which utilises fixed and cooled adsorption beds operating in a batch process and two wet heat exchangers. The proposed innovative adsorption bed is a fin and tube heat exchanger commonly used in the air conditioning sector, wherein the spaces between the fins are filled with silica gel grains. The main feature of this component is to allow simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of air. Furthermore, since the component hosts a considerable amount of adsorption material, solar energy can be efficiently stored in the desiccant media in terms of accumula…

Structure of longitudinal chromomagnetic fields in high energy collisions

2014

We compute expectation values of spatial Wilson loops in the forward light cone of high-energy collisions. We consider ensembles of gauge field configurations generated from a classical Gaussian effective action as well as solutions of high-energy renormalization group evolution with fixed and running coupling. The initial fields correspond to a color field condensate exhibiting domain-like structure over distance scales of order the saturation scale. At later times universal scaling emerges at large distances for all ensembles, with a nontrivial critical exponent. Finally, we compare the results for the Wilson loop to the two-point correlator of magnetic fields.
