Motor and cognitive functions in newly diagnosed adult seizure patients before antiepileptic medication
2000
Objective– Motor and cognitive functions in patients with partial or generalized onset of seizures were evaluated prior to the adminstration of antiepileptic medication. Material and methods– Motor function, attention and memory of 52 consecutive newly diagnosed adult patients with partial or generalized seizures were assessed with neuropsychological tests. Results– Patients with partial onset of seizures did not differ from patients with generalized seizures in tests of motor function or attention, nor in tests of learning and memory. Compared to controls patients with epilepsy performed significantly worse on visual motor tasks, mental flexibily and in delayed visual memory. Within the pa…

Comparative neuroscience of stimulant-induced memory dysfunction: role for neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus.
2010
The discovery that the addictive drugs impair neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus has prompted the elaboration of new biological hypotheses to explain addiction and drug-induced cognitive dysfunction. Considerable evidence now implicates the process of adult neurogenesis in at least some critical components of hippocampal-dependent memory function. In experimental models, psychomotor stimulant drugs produce alterations in the rate of birth, survival, maturation and functional integration of adult-born hippocampal neurons. Thus some of the deleterious consequences of drug abuse on memory could result from the neurotoxic actions of drugs on adult hippocampal neurogenesis. In this review, we…
2019
With the general objective indicated in its title, this work tries to highlight relevant aspects in the continuity of the Spanish domain in the Philippines, dependent on the maintenance of the Spanish capital. The inevitable selection of topics has lead the preferences of this work towards the residents collaboration to defend the city, the conversion of many of them into traders of exotic products and singular slaves owners, and their collaboration to an incredible miscegenation due to the ethnic variety. On the other hand, to follow the footsteps of the first generation of residents in Manila, at the end of the 16th century and during the 17th century, this work gives us some information …
Turbulent mixing and dispersion mechanisms over flexible and dense vegetation
2019
The present study investigates flow turbulence and dispersion processes in the presence of flexible and dense vegetation on the bed. The turbulent dispersion coefficients and the terms of the turbulent kinetic energy equation are determined by using data collected in a straight laboratory channel with living vegetation on the bed. Results show that the turbulent integral lengths assume an order of magnitude comparable to the stems’ characteristic dimension independently by the direction and the turbulence assumes an isotropic behavior. The coefficients of dispersion have a trend similar to that of the turbulent lengths and assume low values in the longitudinal, transversal and vertical dire…
Low angle bending detection semi-transparent piezoresistive sensor
2022
We designed, fabricated, and validated a piezoresistive bending sensor, a fundamental component of wearable electronic devices for monitoring human motion. The most diffused opaque carbon-based resistance flex sensors suffer from low detection for small bending angles. The sensor we here present is based on a semi-transparent active material (fulleropyrrolidine bisadducts polymer) and has the remarkable advantage of good electrical properties for low bending angles. The fabrication steps are effective since a pre-patterned ITO/PET surface is functionalized by chronoamperometric deposition, and the silver electrical contacts are inkjet printed. We propose a fitting function of the measured t…
Precarious work and social protection: between flexicurity and social pollution
2019
The chapter explores the possibility of changing the way in which any social and legal system guarantees social protections for the weakest workers. To do so it elaborates a unique functional set for classifying all kind of precariat, which it names the ‘un[der]-protected workers’. The issue of the precariat is held as an imbalance in the flexicurity balance, considered akin to pollution in the social environment: so-called social pollution. The proposed method to counterbalance the lack of security/protection and rebalance flexicurity is a ‘(non-wage) Social Security (virtual or) Fake (Pigouvian) Tax’ (the SSFT). The idea is that this device either forces companies to hire through SERs (wh…
Straightforward Approach for Preparing Durable Antibacterial ZnO Nanoparticle Coatings on Flexible Substrates
2022
Flexible antibacterial materials have gained utmost importance in protection from the distribution of bacteria and viruses due to the exceptional variety of applications. Herein, we demonstrate a readily scalable and rapid single-step approach for producing durable ZnO nanoparticle antibacterial coating on flexible polymer substrates at room temperature. Substrates used are polystyrene, poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) copolymer, poly(methyl methacrylate), polypropylene, high density polyethylene and a commercial acrylate type adhesive tape. The deposition was achieved by a spin-coating process using a slurry of ZnO nanoparticles in toluene. A stable modification layer was obtained when tolu…
