Entre la sintaxis y el discurso: el caso de 'a lo mejor' y 'al menos' en la conversación coloquial
2018
This paper studies the Spanish forms a lo mejor (maybe) and al menos (at least) from a modular perspective, revisiting the categorization of a lo major and al menos according to the involved linguistic level and analyzing the relations between the adverbial uses of these forms and the discursive ones. Such relations show that the forms a lo mejor and al menos can be considered bicategorial lexical items, what is implemented by a corpus study based on data from spoken language.
De la performance musicale dans la Guyane traditionnelle : expression cognitive singulière d?une musique-verbe
2021
Guianese culture and traditional music, here evoked, are various. It is more a transcultural process that, along centuries, gave an original result born in the Americas, in Guiana in this case. It is a form of refoundation, of recreation of cultures and new human beings generally called Creoles. The musical performance, that I study here, is the echo of social and cultural space of this reformulation of thought, life, and conception of the world. It is, as well, a mean of transposition and transformation of the values issued of diverse sources and categories. It is in no way a second-rate cultural practice, as it is the place where were born philosophies and actions for common life as well …
Normal, Abby Normal, Prefix Normal
2014
A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present results about the number \(\textit{pnw}(n)\) of prefix normal words of length n, showing that \(\textit{pnw}(n) =\Omega\left(2^{n - c\sqrt{n\ln n}}\right)\) for some c and \(\textit{pnw}(n) = O \left(\frac{2^n (\ln n)^2}{n}\right)\). We introduce efficient algorithms for testing the prefix normal property and a “mechanical algorithm” for computing prefix normal forms. We also include games which can be played with prefix normal words. In these games Alice wishes t…
Towards a critical understanding of data visualisation in democracy: a deliberative systems approach
2021
Data and data visualisations – in the forms of graphs, charts and maps – are becoming an increasingly important feature of social, public and political life. Yet within existing scholarship, the democratic significance of data visualisations has thus far received minimal attention. This article offers a first systematic attempt to make sense of and scrutinise the role of data visualisation in democracy. We apply deliberative systems theory in the analysis of three original case studies to elucidate how data visualisation can integrate into the overall anatomy of democracy, and to normatively assess how data visualisation contributes towards key democratic ideals. Conclusively, we highlight …
Chemical gels of scleroglucan obtained by cross-linking with 1,w-dicarboxylic acids: Synthesis and characterization
2005
Chemical gels obtained by cross-linking reaction between scleroglucan and I, omega-dicarboxylic acids having a number of carbon atoms from 4 to 8 in the chain, have been prepared and characterised. The networks show properties correlated with the number of carbon atoms of the acid and with the molar ratio carboxylic acid/glucose unit of the polymer (r) employed in the cross-linking reaction. The diffusion of theophylline, chosen as model drug, through the swelled cross-linked polymers has been also investigated and it has enabled the diffusion coefficients of the drug to be calculated under different environmental conditions. The release profiles of theophylline from tablets prepared with t…
Systematic derivation of partial differential equations for second order boundary value problems
2022
Software systems designed to solve second order boundary value problems are typically restricted to hardwired lists of partial differential equations. In order to come up with more flexible systems, we introduce a systematic approach to find partial differential equations that result in eligible boundary value problems. This enables one to construct and combine one's own partial differential equations instead of choosing those from a pre-given list. This expands significantly end users possibilities to employ boundary value problems in modeling. To introduce the main ideas we employ differential geometry to examine the mathematical structure involved in second order boundary value problems …
Más allá de Marx: postobrerismo y posmarxismo. Una revisión de los fundamentos teóricos de la multitud y el pueblo
2018
The article is a synthetic essay that exposes the main theoretical lines of the postmarxist approach of Laclau and Mouffe, on the one hand, and the autonomist post-operaism of Negri, Hardt, Virno, etc., on the other hand. These theories are conceived as attempts to rationalize current political bets by various political sectors and social movements. It analyzes both argumentative strategies from «orthodox» Marxism and the structure / superstructure relationship; and the forms of constitution of new subjectivities. It compares the theoretical fundamentals of hegemonic articulations and counter-power experiences. It discusses, likewise, the scope and limitations of the categories of «people» …
New degrees of freedom for differential forms on cubical meshes
2022
We consider new degrees of freedom for higher order differential forms on cubical meshes. The approach is inspired by the idea of Rapetti and Bossavit to define higher order Whitney forms and their degrees of freedom using small simplices. We show that higher order differential forms on cubical meshes can be defined analogously using small cubes and prove that these small cubes yield unisolvent degrees of freedom. Significantly, this approach is compatible with discrete exterior calculus and expands the framework to cover higher order methods on cubical meshes, complementing the earlier strategy based on simplices.
Discrete exterior calculus for photonic crystal waveguides
2022
The discrete exterior calculus (DEC) is very promising, though not yet widely used, discretization method for photonic crystal (PC) waveguides. It can be seen as a generalization of the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The DEC enables efficient time evolution by construction and fits well for nonhomogeneous computational domains and obstacles of curved surfaces. These properties are typically present in applications of PC waveguides that are constructed as periodic structures of inhomogeneities in a computational domain. We present a two-dimensional DEC discretization for PC waveguides and demonstrate it with a selection of numerical experiments typical in the application area. …
The Modifying Mirror
2023
Abstract This chapter compares music listening with the infant’s experience of care. Several scholars have argued that music can be used for scaffolding one’s self-experience. Developmental psychologists, in turn, maintain a wide consensus over the claim that, in early interaction, the attuned caregiver supports and modifies the infant’s self-experience in various ways. The chapter brings these phenomena together, illustrating how the examination of the early self/other relation can teach us something important concerning the listener/music relation. The first section elaborates on the scaffolding function of music and clarifies two ambiguities haunting the debate. The second section reloca…
