Photoelectrochemical Evidence of Cu2O/TiO2 Nanotubes Hetero-Junctions formation and their Physicochemical Characterization

Cu2O/TiO2 nanotubes heterojunctions were fabricated by electrochemical deposition of cuprous oxide on TiO2 nanotubes arrays grown by anodizing. X-ray diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy analysis allows for identification of Cu2O, whose morphological features were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy as a function of the charge circulated during the electrodeposition step. Photoelectrochemical measurements in aqueous solutions evidenced a red shift of the light absorption threshold of TiO2 nanotubes due to the presence of cuprous oxide even for very low circulated charges, while electrochemical impedance measurements proved a significant reduction of the electrode impedance due the presenc…

Embryotoxic potential of persistent organic pollutants extracted from tissues of guillemots (Uria aalge) from the Baltic Sea and the Atlantic Ocean

The Baltic Sea is a heavily polluted area. To assess the current contaminant pressure on the common guillemot (Uria aalge) living there, whole-body extracts of guillemots from the Baltic Sea were prepared and subdivided over six fractions, which differed in composition due to lipophilicity and polarity of the contaminants. The fractions were tested in the chicken embryo assay and compared to fractions of Atlantic guillemot extracts. Fertilized chicken eggs were injected with 0.03, 0.3, or 3 bird egg equivalents (BEQ) of the contaminants present in the fractions and then incubated for 19 d. Porous biomaterials and scaffolds for tissue engineering

In the present article, an overview of the definition of tissue engineering and scaffold requirements is reported. In particular, scaffold porosity and its relevance for several tissue target regeneration is highlighted.
