In the Future Everyone Will Be a Fuzzy Set: Enric Trillas, FST as an Experimental Science and the Relationship with Theory of Concepts

2015

Enrique Trillas Ruiz has had a long association with Italy, and for ten years now has been in the Scientific committee of WILF, the International Workshop on Fuzzy Logic born and breed in our country; it was not until WILF 2009, which our research group organised in Terrasini (Palermo) and in which organising committee I sat, that I become aware of the “complementary soul” of Enric’s work. Up to that point I had stumbled upon his papers on fuzzy operators and logic, mostly the joint works of him and Claudi Alsina, such as [1, 2, 21], but my research interest at the time seemed to me away and far apart from the ensemble of symbols and logical implication: I was trying to use the elements of …

Manual packing and soil reuse effects on determination of saturated hydraulic conductivity of a loam soil

2022

Abstract Performing laboratory measurement of saturated hydraulic conductivity, Ks, of sieved soil is important for many scientific purposes such as testing theories and methods to determine Ks. A given soil mass can be used only once or it can be reused after a previous use. Little is known on the dependence of the Ks measurements on both the applied packing method and the reuse of the same soil mass. This lack of knowledge makes comparisons among different investigations more or less uncertain. Four packing methods were tested on an initially dry loam soil by measuring Ks with the simplified falling head (SFH) technique. The four methods differed by the used compacting procedure (dropping…

Factors Influencing Point Measurement of Near-surface Saturated Soil Hydraulic Conductivity in a Small Sicilian Basin

2017

Hydraulic conductivity of saturated soil, Ks, controls many hydrological processes. Parameterization of basin hydrological models in terms of Ks is complicated and uncertain owing to the very high spatial variability of this soil property. A small Sicilian basin was intensively sampled by the simplified falling head technique to obtain spatially distributed Ks data, and an attempt to explain their spatial variability on the basis of soil physical characteristics, digital elevation model-derived topographic attributes and land cover was carried out. High Ks values were obtained when clay content was low and both elevation and mean slope were high. Moreover, differences in Ks among land cover…

Overestimation of the strength of size-assortative pairing in taxa with cryptic diversity: a case of Simpson's paradox.

2015

5 pages; International audience; Size-assortative pairing is one of the most common pairing patterns observed in nature and it probably occurs in many taxa with cryptic diversity. Observed patterns of size-assortative pairing in natural populations may thus be influenced by the co-occurrence of noninterbreeding cryptic groups of individuals living in sympatry. To quantify this potential bias, we sampled amphipods from the Gammarus pulex/Gammarus fossarum crustacean species complex in rivers containing two sympatric and morphologically cryptic groups, i.e. molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs). Within each river, MOTUs did not interbreed and differed in mean body size. We measured th…

Ventricular paired pacing to control intractable junctional tachycardia following open heart surgery in a child.

1989

A 5-month-old girl presented postoperatively with an atrioventricular (A-V) junctional tachycardia at a rate of 245/min following surgical repair of tetralogy of Fallot. The systolic blood pressure dropped to 60 mmHg with this rapid heart rate, and the infant became shocked. Drugs and overdrive pacing were ineffective in suppressing the A-V junctional tachycardia and in improving cardiac output. Ventricular paired pacing was used successfully to halve the mechanically effective ventricular rate and to restore cardiac output. When ventricular paired pacing was stopped after 12 h, the spontaneous rhythm was an atrial rhythm with 1-1 A-V conduction. The patient was discharged in sinus rhythm o…

Laparoscopic management of an isolated left fallopian tube torsion due to twisted Morgagni hydatid in a pre-menarcheal girl.

2014

Isolated torsion of fallopian tube, meanwhile uncommon, should be considered in diagnosis of pelvic and lower abdominal pain. US investigation is an useful diagnostic tool. A prompt diagnosis could avoid salpingectomy and preserve fertility. Laparoscopy, as the first approach, should be preferred. We report a case of isolated tubal torsion occurring in a premenarcheal girl successfully managed by laparoscopy.

Submarine deposits from pumiceous pyroclastic density currents traveling over water: An outstanding example from offshore Montserrat (IODP 340)

2017

© 2016. Geological Society of America. All right reserved. Pyroclastic density currents have been observed to both enter the sea, and to travel over water for tens of kilometers. Here, we identified a 1.2-m-thick, stratified pumice lapilli-ash cored at Site U1396 offshore Montserrat (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Expedition 340) as being the first deposit to provide evidence that it was formed by submarine deposition from pumice-rich pyroclastic density currents that traveled above the water surface. The age of the submarine deposit is ca. 4 Ma, and its magma source is similar to those for much younger Soufrière Hills deposits, indicating that the island experienced large-magnitu…

Determination of extremely low (236)U/(238)U isotope ratios in environmental samples by sector-field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry usi…

2005

A method by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was developed which allows the measurement of (236)U at concentration ranges down to 3 x 10(-14)g g(-1) and extremely low (236)U/(238)U isotope ratios in soil samples of 10(-7). By using the high-efficiency solution introduction system APEX in connection with a sector-field ICP-MS a sensitivity of more than 5,000 counts fg(-1) uranium was achieved. The use of an aerosol desolvating unit reduced the formation rate of uranium hydride ions UH(+)/U(+) down to a level of 10(-6). An abundance sensitivity of 3 x 10(-7) was observed for (236)U/(238)U isotope ratio measurements at mass resolution 4000. The detection limit for (236)U a…

VESTIBULAR AND PROPRIOCEPTIVE REHABILITATION STRATEGY IN ACOUSTIC NEURINOMA

2020

Rehabilitation therapy can be used to treat balance disorders via exercises organized into anatomo-pathological protocols. In general, there is an indication for rehabilitation whenever compensation of a patient’s vestibular system fails to adequately resolve spontaneously. Although the therapeutical indications have expanded over time, it is especially useful to treat balance disorders in neurological patients and those with acute damage to the vestibular system. Specifically, it favors and accelerates spontaneous central compensation in a variety of neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, cerebellar pathologies or in brain tumors like Vestibular Schwannoma …
