Structural and functional features of human muscle-tendon unit.

2006

This paper reviews the architectural details and the in vivo behavior of the human muscle-tendon unit with the focus on the triceps surae and quadriceps femoris muscles. Recent advances in experimental techniques allow in vivo measurements of muscle-tendon architecture and function. In particular, the use of ultrasonography for measurement of tendon and muscle has expanded our knowledge in the last decade. Furthermore, the nuclear magnetic resonance imaging is opening up new insights not only for three-dimensional anatomical information but also for examining musculo-skeletal motion in vivo. While these two completely non-invasive methods provide kinematic data, in vivo force measurements s…

Finding essential features for tracking starfish in a video sequence

2004

The paper introduces a software system for detecting and tracking starfish in an underwater video sequence. The target of such a system is to help biologists in giving an estimate of the number of starfish present in a particular area of the sea-bottom. The nature of the input images is characterised by a low signal/noise ratio and by the presence of noisy background represented by pebbles; this makes the detection a non-trivial task. The procedure we use is a chain of several steps that starts from the extraction of the area of interest and ends with a classifier and a tracker providing the necessary information for counting the starfish present in the scene. © 2003 IEEE.

Discretization estimates for an elliptic control problem

1998

An optimal control problem governed by an elliptic equation written in variational form in an abstract functional framework is considered. The control is subject to restrictions. The optimality conditions are established and the Ritz-Galerkin discretization is introduced. If the error estimate corresponding to the elliptic equation is given as a function like where h is the discretization parameter and is an integer, then the error estimates for the optimal control, for the optimal state and for the optimal value are obtained. These results are applied first for a Two-Point BVP and next for a 2D/3D elliptic problem as state equation. Next a spectral method is used in the discretization proc…

Mammographic images segmentation based on chaotic map clustering algorithm

2013

Background: This work investigates the applicability of a novel clustering approach to the segmentation of mammographic digital images. The chaotic map clustering algorithm is used to group together similar subsets of image pixels resulting in a medically meaningful partition of the mammography. Methods: The image is divided into pixels subsets characterized by a set of conveniently chosen features and each of the corresponding points in the feature space is associated to a map. A mutual coupling strength between the maps depending on the associated distance between feature space points is subsequently introduced. On the system of maps, the simulated evolution through chaotic dynamics leads…

Facilitating joint attention with salient pointing in interactions involving children with autism spectrum disorder

2016

Children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) reportedly have difficulties in responding to bids for joint attention, notably in following pointing gestures. Previous studies have predominantly built on structured observation measures and predefined coding categories to measure children’s responsiveness to gestures. However, how these gestures are designed and what detailed interactional work they can accomplish have received less attention. In this paper, we use a multimodal approach to conversation analysis (CA) to investigate how educators design their use of pointing in interactions involving school-aged children with ASD or autistic features. The analysis shows that pointing had specifi…

Photometric and Spectroscopic Properties of Type Ia Supernova 2018oh with Early Excess Emission from the $Kepler$ 2 Observations

2019

Supernova (SN) 2018oh (ASASSN-18bt) is the first spectroscopically-confirmed type Ia supernova (SN Ia) observed in the $Kepler$ field. The $Kepler$ data revealed an excess emission in its early light curve, allowing to place interesting constraints on its progenitor system (Dimitriadis et al. 2018, Shappee et al. 2018b). Here, we present extensive optical, ultraviolet, and near-infrared photometry, as well as dense sampling of optical spectra, for this object. SN 2018oh is relatively normal in its photometric evolution, with a rise time of 18.3$\pm$0.3 days and $\Delta$m$_{15}(B)=0.96\pm$0.03 mag, but it seems to have bluer $B - V$ colors. We construct the "uvoir" bolometric light curve hav…

A completely automated CAD system for mass detection in a large mammographic database.

2006

Mass localization plays a crucial role in computer-aided detection (CAD) systems for the classification of suspicious regions in mammograms. In this article we present a completely automated classification system for the detection of masses in digitized mammographic images. The tool system we discuss consists in three processing levels: (a) Image segmentation for the localization of regions of interest (ROIs). This step relies on an iterative dynamical threshold algorithm able to select iso-intensity closed contours around gray level maxima of the mammogram. (b) ROI characterization by means of textural features computed from the gray tone spatial dependence matrix (GTSDM), containing secon…

Architettura in alzato. Questioni di territorio, paesaggio, ambiente

2021

Denied to typology Southern architecture in the essay recognizes a specific identity and perfect exceptionality in the essence of the place. If the facade establishes a relationship with the aesthetics of the landscape the underlying themes define other significant relationships. The logical ordering of the members the geometric clarity and the rigor of the relationships refer to an architecture that is measured and is a measure itself of the territory and its morphology. In turn the thickness of the facade expresses the relationship with the environment and interprets the climatic conditions in a poetic way intervening on the control of light on the voids in the wall faces on the determination of the shadow. In this way facade-proportion-thickness with the corresponding terms of landscape-territory-environment relationship define a double triad attributable to patterns and features typical of southern Italy and which however also belong to other southern Europe.Settore ICAR/14 - Composizione Architettonica E Urbana

Social work online: a recognition of experiences and practices in Italy

2018

‘The Internet is the fabric or our lives’ [Castells, M. (2001). The Internet Galaxy: Reflections on the Internet, Business, and Society. Oxford: Oxford University Press, p. 1] – but which are the weaves that nowadays connect Italian social workers into such a fabric? Herein we aim at answering this question through a survey of on-line resources, nodes and practices of e-Social Work in Italy. We shall be discussing ICT impact on the Italian context, and the utilization of ICT by Italian social workers, in order to build up the internal and external factors that determine the current utilization levels of these emerging tools within the professional community. A review of the major on-line so…
