Quine’s conflicts with truth deflationism

AbstractCompared to the extensive amount of literature on various themes of W.V.O. Quine’s philosophy, his immanent concept of truth remains a relatively unexplored topic. This relative lack of research contributes to a persistent confusion on the deflationary and inflationary details of Quine’s truth. According to a popular reading, Quine’s disquotational definition of the truth predicate exhausts the topic of truth, thus amounting to a deflationary view. Others promote opposing interpretations. Il saggio riflette sul fondamento dell'obbligazione morale cercando di mostrare perché essa possa intendersi come vincolo di gratuità. Si prende avvio dalla nozione tomista di legge morale naturale, approfondendo il suo significato nell'orizzonte della razionalità pratica e concentrando l'attenzione sulle implicazioni del principio "bonum faciendum". Emerge come l'uomo sia chiamato a lasciarsi appartenere ad una logica di gratuità che innerva l'actus essendi secondo un intimo convenire del finalismo ontologico e del bene come ricchezza auto-diffusiva.

The essays starts from Nietzsche's analysis of ancient Rhetorics as pursued in his lecture courses and explores his notion of language as set of metaphors in order to outline two models of truth that can be traced back in greek thought: 1. "judiciary" truth as refutation of the opposite opinion and 2. truth as will to integrate the opposition into a non-violent form of knowledge and agreement.
