Neutron generator for BNCT based on high current ECR ion source with gyrotron plasma heating
2015
BNCT development nowadays is constrained by a progress in neutron sources design. Creation of a cheap and compact intense neutron source would significantly simplify trial treatments avoiding use of expensive and complicated nuclear reactors and accelerators. D-D or D-T neutron generator is one of alternative types of such sources for. A so-called high current quasi-gasdynamic ECR ion source with plasma heating by millimeter wave gyrotron radiation is suggested to be used in a scheme of D-D neutron generator in the present work. Ion source of that type was developed in the Institute of Applied Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences (Nizhny Novgorod, Russia). It can produce deuteron ion beam…
Determination of the stochastic evolution equation from noisy experimental data
2003
We have determined the coefficients of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation as functions of coarse graining, which best describe the time evolution and spatial behavior observed for slow-combustion fronts in sheets of paper and magnetic flux fronts in a thin-film high-Tc superconductor. Reconstruction of the relevant equation of motion and its coefficients was mainly based on the inverse method proposed by Lam and Sander [Phys. Rev. Lett. 71, 561 (1993)]. The coefficient of the nonlinear term was also determined from the local slope-dependence of the front velocity.
Development and test of iron-free quadrupole lenses with high magnetic flux densities
2003
Abstract Iron-free magnetic quadrupole lenses have been developed for the focusing of energetic bunched heavy-ion beams. These devices are operated in a pulsed mode and provide very strong magnetic fields. A magnetic flux density of more than 14 T has been reached in a 100 mm long quadrupole with a 20 mm wide aperture, which corresponds to a magnetic flux density of ∼1400 T/m. The pulse duration of the applied electric current is approximately 300 μs with a flat top of several μs. The calculated and measured field properties of the quadrupoles are presented. In a first test experiment with a fast-extracted 650 MeV/u 197 Au 79+ beam (bunch length ∼500 ns) at GSI the focusing properties could…
The fast readout system for the MAPMTs of COMPASS RICH-1
2007
A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultiplie…
BeppoSAX observation of the transient X-ray pulsar GS 1843+009
1999
Abstract The transient X-ray pulsar GS 1843+009 was observed by BeppoSAX satellite on 1997 April 4, while it was at flux level of 50 mCrab in the 20–200 keV energy band. Using the MECS and LECS concentrators, the source position was measured with unprecedented accuracy of 30. In this poster we present results on both spectral and temporal analysis.
Calculations for a disk source and a general detector using a radiation vector potential
2008
A closed form expression for a radiation vector potential is derived for a generalized disk radiation source. By applying Stokes's theorem the surface integral for the radiation flux into a general detector is converted into a much simpler line integral of the vector potential around the edge of the detector. This line integral can be easily evaluated for general detector geometry and general location and angular orientation relative to the disk source. For a number of cases the line integral reduces to integrals of Bessel functions which give various generalizations of Ruby's formula. Explicit formulas and numerical results for the geometric efficiency are given for circular and elliptical…
Limit on Lorentz andCPTviolation of the bound neutron using a free precessionHe3/Xe129comagnetometer
2010
We report on the search for Lorentz-violating sidereal variations of the frequency difference of colocated spin species while the Earth and hence the laboratory reference frame rotates with respect to a relic background field. The comagnetometer used is based on the detection of freely precessing nuclear spins from polarized 3 He and 129 Xe gas samples using SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. As result we can determine the limit for the equatorial component of the background field interacting with the spin of the bound neutron to be b n ⊥ < 3.7 · 10- 32 GeV (95% C.L.).
Accurate Fission Data for Nuclear Safety
2013
The Accurate fission data for nuclear safety (AlFONS) project aims at high precision measurements of fission yields, using the renewed IGISOL mass separator facility in combination with a new high current light ion cyclotron at the University of Jyvaskyla. The 30 MeV proton beam will be used to create fast and thermal neutron spectra for the study of neutron induced fission yields. Thanks to a series of mass separating elements, culminating with the JYFLTRAP Penning trap, it is possible to achieve a mass resolving power in the order of a few hundred thousands. In this paper we present the experimental setup and the design of a neutron converter target for IGISOL. The goal is to have a flexi…
Gyrotron-driven high current ECR ion source for boron-neutron capture therapy neutron generator
2014
Abstract Boron-neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a perspective treatment method for radiation resistant tumors. Unfortunately its development is strongly held back by a several physical and medical problems. Neutron sources for BNCT currently are limited to nuclear reactors and accelerators. For wide spread of BNCT investigations more compact and cheap neutron source would be much more preferable. In present paper an approach for compact D–D neutron generator creation based on a high current ECR ion source is suggested. Results on dense proton beams production are presented. A possibility of ion beams formation with current density up to 600 mA/cm 2 is demonstrated. Estimations based on obt…
High-frequency even harmonics generation in a plasma with electron heat flux
2004
It is shown that in a weakly nonuniform plasma with electron heat flux the generation of odd and even harmonics of high frequency radiation is possible. The even harmonics properties qualitatively differ as compared to those of odd harmonics and depend in an essential way on the heat flux value and orientation with respect to the fundamental wave polarization and propagation directions.
