Practices of Writing in Ethnographic Work

Although the practice of writing is key to the production of ethnographic knowledge, the topic remains understudied. Using material from our own ethnographic research in the fields of air travel and cultural heritage as data, we develop a reflexive account of ethnographic writing. We examine in detail the practices of jotting down observations, writing field notes, analytic annotating, ordering and rearranging, and drafting and revising papers. The article takes a praxeological stance, conceptualizing writing as a practice that is simultaneously cognitive, embodied, and material. In the 1980s, a group of South Asian scholars pioneered Subaltern Studies drawing on one of Gramsci’s most famous and used categories: the subaltern. This chapter attempts a philological analysis of Gramsci’s work to show how the use of this term has been at times incorrect, in part because of the lack, until recently, of complete translations of Gramsci’s writings. Subaltern Studies’ interpretation has arguably oriented Gramsci’s notion of the subaltern to the ethical and political needs of an emancipatory project. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seuran tutkija Ulla Lipposen (1941–2015) tallettaman digitaalisen folkloreaineiston kuvaa 2000- luvun hulluudesta osana kansanhuumoria. Artikkelissa pohditaan, millaista kuvaa yhteiskunnasta ja hulluna pidetyn ilmentymistä nuorten aikuisten tallettamat esimerkit rakentavat. Mille niissä nauretaan tai millaiseen kulttuuriseen keskusteluun ne ottavat osaa huumorin keinoin?
