Combined dynamics of the 500–600 nm leaf absorption and chlorophyll fluorescence changes in vivo: Evidence for the multifunctional energy quenching r…

2021

Carotenoids (Cars) regulate the energy flow towards the reaction centres in a versatile way whereby the switch between energy harvesting and dissipation is strongly modulated by the operation of the xanthophyll cycles. However, the cascade of molecular mechanisms during the change from light harvesting to energy dissipation remains spectrally poorly understood. By characterizing the in vivo absorbance changes (Delta A) of leaves from four species in the 500-600 nm range through a Gaussian decomposition, while measuring passively simultaneous Chla fluorescence (F) changes, we present a direct observation of the quick antenna adjustments during a 3-min dark-to-high-light induction. Underlying…

Monumental chestnut trees: source of genetic diversity, cultural and landscape value

2019

The mtonumental trees are unique individuals tof venerable age and ctonsiderable size, which represent a heritage tof inestimable histtorical, cultural, landscape, and scientific value ftor the territtory. They alsto ctonstitute a stource tof genetic diversity which ctonfers them ltongevity and ability tto adapt tto climate and envirtonmental changes. In this ctontext, studies ton centennial trees can be useful ftor interpretatiton tof species histtory as migratiton events, selectiton and anthrtoptogenic actiton. The aim tof this research was tto evaluate the genetic variability tof ancient Castanea sativa trees and relate them tto actual natural/naturalized ptopulatitons and varieties in t…

Tale(s) of a forest – re-creation of a primeval forest in three environmental narratives

2020

We analyze three environmentally conscious works that are concerned with the state of Finnish forests: the documentary film Metsän tarina/Tale of a Forest (2012), the book with the same name (2013) and the series of short documentaries Tarinoita metsästä/Tales from the Forest (2013). By combining methods from arts research and ecology, we ask how the narratives adapt material from nature photography. The film and book present mythic stories and old Finnish beliefs about forests. They also contain references to cultural memory. Additionally, the biodiversity on display reflects a conventional practice to exhibit large or charismatic species. However, the ecological message remains only impli…

MANAGEMENT ECOSYSTEM IN DUMBRAVA SIBIULUI FOREST ON THE EVOLUTION OF SPECIES MACROLEPIDOPTERA SIBIU DURING THE YEARS 2000-2012

2014

It was studied the ecology and phenology, the flight periods of the Macrolepidoptera during the period 2000-20012 in the Natural Park „Dumbrava Sibiului”. The natural conditions and the specific features were mentioned in my previous papers (Stancă-Moise, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2010, 2011, 2012). There is no doubt that the appearance of the different species of Macrolepidoptera in different periods of time is in a direct relation with the succession of the climatic conditions. The flight periods express the biological specific feature of each species of Lepidoptera, being in direct connection with the activity of feeding and reproduction of imagos.

A review of the world's soil museums and exhibitions

2021

The soil science community needs to communicate about soils and the use of soil information to various audiences, especially to the general public and public authorities. In this global review article, we synthesis information pertaining to museums solely dedicated to soils or which contain a permanent exhibition on soils. We identified 38 soil museums specifically dedicated to soils, 34 permanent soil exhibitions, and 32 collections about soils that are accessible by appointment. We evaluate the growth of the number of museums since the early 1900s, their geographical distribution, their contents, and their attendance. The number of museums has been continuously growing since the early 190…

Harnessing productivity potential and rehabilitation of degraded sodic lands through Jatropha based intercropping systems

2016

Abstract This paper evaluates an intercropping model with J atropha curcas L. (JCL) as an alternative crop on degraded sodic land in north India. Monoculture of JCL has not proven economically viable in India in view of its poor yield; therefore, intercrops in between JCL plantations were tried to optimize land use efficiency. The results revealed that the planting of JCL at 3 × 3 m spacing with inter-cultivation of sweet basil–matricaria (SB-M) cropping system for four years was more economically viable than planting at 3 × 2 m spacing and the other rotations tested in the study. Improvements in soil properties in terms of soil pH, EC and organic carbon were found with the SB-M cropping sy…

Soil is brown gold in the Emilia-Romagna region, Italy

2014

Soil is a natural resource essential to human welfare by virtue of its numerous crucial functions. In the past, soil has been taken for granted because of its widespread, albeit finite, availability. However, now that world's population is projected to exceed ten billion before the end of this century, soil is increasingly perceived as a precious commodity. Consequently, soil is increasingly under pressure by rich private investors and governments within the poorest countries to satisfy appetites for food production and biofuel. A case study is used to explore the plausibility of soil being considered as ‘brown gold’. Based on the comparison of land use maps, we estimated the value in terms…

Changing female spacing behaviour and demography in an enclosed breeding population of Clethrionomys glareolus

1988

The social organization of Clethrionomys glareolus Schreber was studied by live trapping in an enclosure of 0.8 ha in Central Finland between the years 1982–1986. The enclosure consisted of three habitats: abandoned field, brushwood, and moist spruce heath forest. The population density increased from 50 voles ha−1 in 1982 and 1983 to 150 ha−1 in 1984 and 1985. In the summer of 1986 the population crashed to almost zero. In the summer of 1984 after winter breeding the number of breeding females grew to 22 compared with 6–7 in previous years. In 1984 the mature females changed from territorial to group behaviour. During the high population density in 1984 and 1985 breeding stopped already in…
