Remote sensing of volcanic CO2, HF, HCl, SO2, and BrO in the downwind plume of Mt. Etna

2017

Remote sensing of the gaseous composition of non-eruptive, passively degassing volcanic plumes can be a tool to gain insight into volcano interior processes. Here, we report on a field study in September 2015 that demonstrates the feasibility of remotely measuring the volcanic enhancements of carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen fluoride (HF), hydrogen chloride (HCl), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and bromine monoxide (BrO) in the downwind plume of Mt. Etna using portable and rugged spectroscopic instrumentation. To this end, we operated the Fourier transform spectrometer EM27/SUN for the shortwave-infrared (SWIR) spectral range together with a co-mounted UV spectrometer on a mobile platform in direct-su…

Comparison of aircraft measurements during GoAmazon2014/5 and ACRIDICON-CHUVA

2019

Abstract. The indirect effect of atmospheric aerosol particles on the Earth's radiation balance remains one of the most uncertain components affecting climate change throughout the industrial period. The large uncertainty is partly due to the incomplete understanding of aerosol–cloud interactions. One objective of the GoAmazon2014/5 and the ACRIDICON (Aerosol, Cloud, Precipitation, and Radiation Interactions and Dynamics of Convective Cloud Systems)-CHUVA (Cloud Processes of the Main Precipitation Systems in Brazil) projects was to understand the influence of emissions from the tropical megacity of Manaus (Brazil) on the surrounding atmospheric environment of the rainforest and to investiga…

Evaluation of the coupled high-resolution atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) using in situ and MAX-DOAS NO2 measurements

2021

We present high spatial resolution (up to 2.2×2.2 km2) simulations focussed over south-west Germany using the online coupled regional atmospheric chemistry model system MECO(n) (MESSy-fied ECHAM and COSMO models nested n times). Numerical simulation of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) surface volume mixing ratios (VMRs) are compared to in situ measurements from a network with 193 locations including background, traffic-adjacent and industrial stations to investigate the model's performance in simulating the spatial and temporal variability of short-lived chemical species. We show that the use of a high-resolution and up-to-date emission inventory is crucial for reproducing the spatial variability and…

Analysis and optimization against buckling of beams interacting with elastic foundation

2017

We consider an infinite continuous elastic beam that interacts with linearly elastic foundation and is under compression. The problem of the beam buckling is formulated and analyzed. Then the optimization of beam against buckling is investigated. As a design variable (control function) we take the parameters of cross-section distribution of the beam from the set of periodic functions and transform the original problem of optimization of infinite beam to the corresponding problem defined at the finite interval. All investigations are on the whole founded on the analytical variational approaches and the optimal solutions are studied as a function of problems parameters. peerReviewed

The Psychological Foundations of Management in Family Firms: Values, Biases, and Heuristics

2021

Considering the heterogeneity of family firm behaviors as reflecting the values, biases, and heuristics of individuals, we discuss the implications of the psychological foundations of management in family firms. We develop a conceptual framework for investigating how the values, biases, and heuristics of family and nonfamily members affect strategic decision-making and the outcomes of family firms. To advance the field, we put forward some relevant questions and offer a future research agenda at the intersection of the psychological foundations of management and family business.

True V or not True V, That is the Question

2016

In this paper we intend to argue that: (1) the question `True V or not True V' is central to both the philosophical and mathematical investigations of the foundations of mathematics; (2) when posed within a framework in which set theory is seen as a science of objects, the question `True V or not True V' generates a dilemma each horn of which turns out to be unacceptable; (3) a plausible way out of the dilemma mentioned at (2) is provided by an approach to set theory according to which this is considered to be a science of structures.

La dimensione ecumenica del rito della fondazione di una Chiesa nella tradizione bizantina greca e latina

2013

The dedication of a Church is not the only rite that is used for the initiation of a new place of Christian worship. At the beginning of the construction of a building, liturgical sources provide for the Rite of Foundation of a Church in which blessings are asked on both the workers and also on the future edifice. This paper gives a comparative analysis of prayers used in the rites of the Byzantine-Greek and Latin traditions. Although both traditions have different theological emphasis they also have similarities too. This study bears fruit in allowing us to create a common ecumenical definition of the church-building arising from these analysed texts – it is the future place of Christian w…

Finiteness in a Minimalist Foundation

2008

We analyze the concepts of finite set and finite subset from the perspective of a minimalist foundational theory which has recently been introduced by Maria Emilia Maietti and the second author. The main feature of that theory and, as a consequence, of our approach is compatibility with other foundational theories such as Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory, Martin-Lof's intuitionistic Type Theory, topos theory, Aczel's CZF, Coquand's Calculus of Constructions. This compatibility forces our arguments to be constructive in a strong sense: no use is made of powerful principles such as the axiom of choice, the power-set axiom, the law of the excluded middle.

LONG-TERM STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCIES IN A MAT FOUNDATION ON CLAY SOIL

2013

A 3-story building with a mat foundation consisting of a slab on a grid of grade beams performed poorly on clay soil. Cracking of the slab became rogressively worse as a result of the incorrect esign and fluctuations in the groundwater pressure under the foundation. The cyclic presence and absence of water rusted the steel reinforcement, and the sulfates in the clay soil caused formation of ettringite in the concrete. Plastic hinges formed in the slab and settlements occurred, causing damage to the beams. The situation is still in progress and may lead to the collapse of the structure under normal service conditions. The geotechnical and structural investigations performed to survey and ass…
