CFD Assisted Steady-State Modelling of Restrictive Counterbalance Valves

The counterbalance valve is an important component in many hydraulic applications and its behaviour hugely impacts system stability and performance. Despite that, CBVs are rarely modelled accurately due to the effort required to obtain basic model parameters and the complexity involved in identifying expressions for flow forces and friction. The objective of this prospective clinical study was to analyze the pain (intensity, location and type) that patients presented after the placement of different types of orthodontic appliances: conventional, low friction, lingual and aligners. Non-Linear Hysteretic Instability in Rotating Machinery

The destabilizing influence of the shaft hysteresis on the supercritical whirl of rotating machines can be efficiently counterbalanced by proper external dissipative sources in the supports and/or anisotropic suspension systems. The hysteretic effect may be treated either by dry or viscous models obtaining different but somehow similar results in the hypothesis of small dissipation levels. Thus the linear viscous assumption is often accepted as a crude approximation for a straightforward analysis of the whirling instability. Nevertheless the internal friction should be regarded most likely as non-linear and could be approximated for example by Coulombian models taking thus into account also the releasing effect of some shrink-fit coupling present in the mechanical assembly.

Non associative damage interface model for mixed mode delamination and frictional contact

Abstract The present paper proposes a new interface constitutive model based on the non-associative damage mechanics and frictional plasticity. The model is developed in a thermodynamically consistent framework, with three independent damage variables. The non associative flow rules drive the concurrent evolution of the three damage variables. The interface model provides two independent values for the mode I fracture energy and the mode II fracture energy and it is able to accurately reproduce arbitrary mixed mode fracture conditions. FSW lap joint resistance optimization through gradient techniques

In the recent years the scientific interest on Friction Stir Welding (FSW) has grown more and more since such joining technique allows to weld light weight alloys rather difficult to be welded or even “un-weldable” with the classic fusion welding operations. What is more, a few industrial applications of the process are already known in different manufacturing fields. In the paper the optimization problem of a FSW lap joint for automotive applications is investigated taking into account process parameters such as the tool rotating speed and the tool feed rate; a numerical gradient technique is applied for the optimization procedure reducing the number of experimental tests to be developed.
