Energy management of a thermally coupled fuel cell system and metal hydride tank
2019
International audience; Being produced from renewable energy, hydrogen is one of the most efficient energy carriers of the future. Using metal alloys, hydrogen can be stored and transported at a low cost, in a safe and effective manner. However, most metals react with hydrogen to form a compound called metal hydride (MH). This reaction is an exothermic process, and as a result releases heat. With sufficient heat supply, hydrogen can be released from the as-formed metal hydride. In this work, we propose an integrated power system of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) together with a hydride tank designed for vehicle use. We investigate different aspects for developing metal hydride…
Review of gas diffusion cathodes for alkaline fuel cells
2009
Abstract This paper gives a technical background to alkaline fuel cells (AFCs), introducing the advantages and drawbacks of the technology. AFCs offer the potential for low cost, mass producible fuel cells, without the dependency on platinum based catalysts and (currently) expensive membrane electrolytes. The AFC uses relatively low cost electrolytes based on aqueous bases such as potassium hydroxide. The inherent CO 2 sensitivity of the electrolyte can be addressed by filtering out the CO 2 from the air intake using a simple scrubber and periodically replacing the liquid electrolyte. A review of the state-of-the-art in gas diffusion cathode development is given. The overall cell performanc…
High Accuracy Modelling of Hybrid Power Supplies
2011
This chapter proposes a modelling approach based on the PSIM/Simulink co-simulation toolbox for hybrid power supplies, featuring high accuracy. Hybrid source performances are fully tested during behavioural simulations. The importance of high-accuracy modelling is investigated and modelling guidelines for both power sources and load are given for further applications. The Simulink model is analyzed and the efficiency of the proposed approach is verified by the comparison between simulation and experimental results. In the last few years, hybrid power supplies are investigated for a wide variety of application areas: two primary sources are coupled to take advantages of both, overcoming thei…
Fuel cells for household appliances: Experimental test of power management algorithms
2013
In this paper, fuel cell - based hybrid power supplies for household appliances are addressed. The profile of residential power consumption is evaluated during working, non-working days in both summer and winter periods. The worst-case load power demand is therefore highlighted. A 5kW Nuvera PowerFlow proton exchange membrane fuel cell for household appliances is tested. On the basis of the characterization of the fuel cell stack under test, stand-alone and fuel cell - battery active hybrid power supply architectures are both considered. Experimental validation of three power management algorithms is proposed in terms of hydrogen consumption, cost and energy saving. Power management algorit…
A Deep Insight into Different Acidic Additives as Doping Agents for Enhancing Proton Conductivity on Polybenzimidazole Membranes
2020
[EN] The use of phosphoric acid doped polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes for fuel cell applications has been extensively studied in the past decades. In this article, we present a systematic study of the physicochemical properties and proton conductivity of PBI membranes doped with the commonly used phosphoric acid at different concentrations (0.1, 1, and 14 M), and with other alternative acids such as phytic acid (0.075 M) and phosphotungstic acid (HPW, 0.1 M). The use of these three acids was reflected in the formation of channels in the polymeric network as observed by cross-section SEM images. The acid doping enhanced proton conductivity of PBI membranes and, after doping, these conducti…
Phosphoric Acid Doped Polybenzimidazole (PBI)/Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework Composite Membranes with Significantly Enhanced Proton Conductivity unde…
2018
The preparation and characterization of composite polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes containing zeolitic imidazolate framework 8 (ZIF-8) and zeolitic imidazolate framework 67 (ZIF-67) is reported. The phosphoric acid doped composite membranes display proton conductivity values that increase with increasing temperatures, maintaining their conductivity under anhydrous conditions. The addition of ZIF to the polymeric matrix enhances proton transport relative to the values observed for PBI and ZIFs alone. For example, the proton conductivity of PBI@ZIF-8 reaches 3.1 10&minus

Load match and grid interaction optimization of a net zero energy building through electricity storage: An Italian case-study
2016
The study aims at applying of Load Match and Grid Interaction indexes to a Net Zero Energy Building in order to optimize the performances of its energy systems. The case study is a modular prefabricated house that uses solar energy (photovoltaic) and natural gas (Fuel Cell) as energy sources and equipped with an Energy Management System addressing the optimal energy use.
