Functional gastrointestinal disorders among soldiers in peacetime versus out-of-area missions.

2001

Functional gastrointestinal syndromes are chronic disorders of the abdomen with an absence of organic findings. The aim of this study was to compare the frequency and symptomatology of functional abdominal syndromes in soldiers during an out-of-area mission versus during peacetime at home. We examined 124 soldiers who sought medical care for abdominal symptoms at the German Field Hospital Trogir, Croatia. The control group consisted of 113 soldiers who were referred with abdominal symptoms to the Central Hospital of German Armed Forces Koblenz, Germany. After excluding an organic disease, the diagnosis of a functional disorder was made. Fourteen percent of the Implementation Force soldiers …

Population pharmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin in critically ill patients.

2006

Summary Background:  Intensive care unit patients are a highly heterogeneous population. Accurate dosing for this population requires characterization of the appropriate pharmacokinetic parameters. Objective:  To estimate population pharmacokinetic parameters of vancomycin (VAN) in adult critically ill patients and to establish the predictive performance of the resulting model. Patients and method:  Fifty critically ill patients with suspected or documented infection with VAN-sensitive micro-organisms were included. Thirty patients and 234 serum concentration–time sets obtained during clinical routine monitoring were used to estimate the pharmacokinetic parameters (group A). An open bicompa…

Maternal body mass index in pregnancy and offspring physical and psychosocial functioning in older age: findings from the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study…

2016

Maternal obesity is associated with several adverse long-term health outcomes in the offspring. In this study, we examined the association between maternal body mass index (BMI) and offspring physical and psychosocial functioning in late adulthood. The study included 1759 men and women born during 1934-1944 and belonging to the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study. Data on maternal weight and height in late pregnancy and on offspring birth weight were retrieved from hospital birth records. Physical and psychosocial functioning was assessed using the Short Form 36 scale.Maternal BMI was positively associated with poorer physical and psychosocial functioning among men, but not among women. This associa…

Long-term management and prognosis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH): a single center experience.

2001

Background Controlled trials have firmly established the need for immunosuppressive therapy in autoimmune hepatitis. However, reports about long-term management and prognosis of the disease are scarce. Patients and methods We reviewed the charts of 103 consecutive patients with a well-documented long-term course of autoimmune hepatitis who had been carefully managed over a mean observation period of 95 months (12-405 months). Results Under immunosuppressive therapy 94 patients (91.2%) reached complete remission after a mean treatment duration of 3 +/- 3 months. 28 of the 103 patients (27.2%) were eligible for a trial of treatment withdrawal after a mean treatment duration of 32.2 months (ra…

Sexual Function and Quality of Life in Adult Male Individuals with Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex—a Survey of the German CURE-Network

2017

Objective To investigate sexual function and quality of life (QoL) in adult male individuals with exstrophy-epispadias complex (EEC). Data from the German Network for Congenital Urorectal Malformations (CURE-Net) were used. Patients and Methods Fifty-one male participants (≥18 years) recruited by CURE-Net between 2009 and 2012 were re-contacted per mail and asked to fill out 4 questionnaires including International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF-5), Cologne Assessment of Erectile Dysfunction (KEED), the Short-Form 36 (SF-36), and one self-designed questionnaire about their medical history, current health status, and sexual experience. The SF-36 results were compared with general German po…

Non‐uniform displacement within ruptured Achilles tendon during isometric contraction

2021

The purpose of this study was investigate tendon displacement patterns in non-surgically treated patients 14 months after acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) and to classify patients into groups based on their Achilles tendon (AT) displacement patterns. Twenty patients were tested. Sagittal images of AT were acquired using B-mode ultrasonography during ramp contractions at a torque level corresponding to 30% of the maximal isometric plantarflexion torque of the uninjured limb. A speckle tracking algorithm was used to track proximal-distal movement of the tendon tissue at 6 antero-posterior locations. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA for peak tendon displacement was performed. K-means cluster…

Potent bronchoprotective effect of deep inspiration and its absence in asthma

2000

In the absence of deep inspirations, healthy individuals develop bronchoconstriction with methacholine inhalation. One hypothesis is that deep inspiration results in bronchodilation. In this study, we tested an alternative hypothesis, that deep inspiration acts as a bronchoprotector. Single-dose methacholine bronchoprovocations were performed after 20 min of deep breath inhibition, in nine healthy subjects and in eight asthmatics, to establish the dose that reduces forced expiratory volume in 1 s by >15%. The provocation was repeated with two and five deep inspirations preceding methacholine. Additional studies were carried out to assess optimization and reproducibility of the protocol …

On-eye optical quality of daily disposable contact lenses for different wearing times

2012

Purpose To quantify the optical quality of various daily disposable contact lenses in vivo and to ascertain its variation in terms of wearing time by means of objective non-invasive determination of wavefront patterns. Methods The crx1 adaptive-optics system was used to measure the wavefront aberrations in 15 myopic eyes before and at 2-h intervals after contact lens fitting, over a 12-h wearing period. Seven types of contact lenses having different material, water content and lens design were evaluated in this study: Dailies Total1, Dailies AquaComfort Plus, Proclear 1 Day, 1-Day Acuvue TruEye, 1-Day Acuvue moist, SofLens daily disposable and Clariti 1-Day. The aberration data were analyse…

Crystalens HD Intraocular Lens Analysis Using an Adaptive Optics Visual Simulator

2013

PURPOSE To compare visual and optical quality of the Crystalens HD intraocular lens (IOL) with that of a monofocal IOL. METHODS The wavefront aberration patterns of the monocular Akreos Adapt AO IOL and the single-optic accommodating Crystalens HD IOL were measured in a model eye. The Crystalens IOL was measured in its nonaccommodative state and then, after flexing the haptic to produce 1.4 mm of movement, in its accommodative state. Using an adaptive optics system, subjects' aberrations were removed and replaced with those of pseudophakes viewing with either lens. Monocular distance visual acuity (DVA) at high (100%), medium (50%), and low (10%) contrast and contrast sensitivity (CS) were …

BRAF(V600E) mutation influences hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha expression levels in papillary thyroid cancer

2010

Abstract Hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha is found frequently overexpressed in solid tumors cells, exerting an important role in angiogenesis, glucose metabolism, cell proliferation, survival and invasion. In thyroid carcinomas, hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha expression was found increased in differentiated, poorly differentiated, medullary and anaplastic variants. Hypoxia represents the principal stimulus responsible for hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha induction. Other nonhypoxic stimuli increase hypoxia-inducible factor-1alpha synthesis through the activation of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in a cell-type-specific manner. We have previously s…
