Neutral Spine Control Exercises in Rehabilitation After Lumbar Spine Fusion

Lumbar spine fusion (LSF) has been reported to change the biomechanics of the spine and therefore the rehabilitation after LSF is important. In this study, the effect of selected neutral spine control exercises on activation of trunk muscles after LSF was evaluated. Muscle activity was measured by surface electromyography of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, longissimus, and multifidus muscles during 6 exercises in 22 LSF patients (mean age = 59 years; age range = 25-84 years; 50% women). Anterior fusion for cervical spondylosis

Anterior fusion was performed on 138 patients as treatment for degenerative changes of the cervical vertebral column. The results were checked after up to 11 years in 122 patients and were found to be good in 55%, fair in 3895% and poor in 6.5%. There were complications of phonetic paralysis in one case, Horner syndrome in two cases, 2 wound infections, and complaints about the iliac crest in 3 patients. Kyphosis at the fused segment occurred 26.1% of cases, the average angle being 15.3 degrees, but it did not influence the clinical results. Mortality was 2%. Ultrasound-guided lumbar puncture for nusinersen administration in spinal muscular atrophy patients.

Background and purpose The purpose was to report the results of ultrasound-guided lumbar puncture for the administration of nusinersen in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) patients with complex spines. Methods Eighteen SMA patients (five children, five adolescents and eight adults) with either severe scoliosis or spondylodesis were evaluated for ultrasound-guided lumbar puncture. Some typical structural modes are described in terms of models like the “barrel stave”, “toroidal pore”, “carpet” etc. These models are related to the alignment states of the peptides in the lipid bilayers (surface bound “S-state”, inserted “I-state” or tilted “T-state”), which can be readily characterized by solid state NMR.
