Literary translation and the parallax gap: reflections on a pilot questionnaire

2010

This article is the English version of "La traducción literaria y la brecha de paralaje: reflexiones a partir de un cuestionario piloto" by Fruela Fernández. It was not published on the print version of MonTI for reasons of space. The online version of MonTI does not suffer from these limitations, and this is our way of promoting plurilingualism. Historically, social research has alternated between conceptual opposites that social constructionism tries to reconcile. By analyzing the issues raised and responses given to a pilot questionnaire completed by literary translators, this article discusses approaches that could be applied to sociological research in literary translation. Special emp…

Electronic exchanges between adsorbed Ni atoms and TiO2(110) surface evidenced by resonant photoemission

2011

Abstract Nickel was deposited on stoichiometric TiO2(1 1 0) surface in the 0.02–2.1 equivalent monolayer (eqML) range and analyzed by means of photoemission and resonant photoemission. In the case of very low coverage (lower than 0.1 eqML), deposited nickel reacts with the surface through an electronic transfer from nickel atoms towards titanium ions. This exchange caused the filling of unoccupied Ti3d states leading to the increase of a peak in the TiO2 band gap. These states can be better characterized through resonant photoemission experiments at the Ti 3p → 3d absorption edge: for very low coverage, these states in the TiO2 band gap have resonant behavior of Ti3d electrons rather than N…

Raman Spectroscopy and Low-Temperature Transport Measurements of Individual Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes with Varying Thickness

2009

We have investigated two metallic and one semiconducting individual single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) and one bundle of two semiconducting nanotubes with a diameter range 1.1−2.9 nm with Raman spectroscopy and low-temperature electric transport measurements. With these two methods, we obtain mutually independent measurements on the basic properties of a specific nanotube. In particular, we obtain data on metallic and semiconducting properties. Evidence of a small band gap for one metallic tube was obtained. For the semiconducting SWNTs with diameters of 2.7−2.9 nm, a special resonance condition was observed which causes an anomalous intensity ratio for the two components of the G-band. …

Reading, Gender, and Engagement : Lessons From Five PISA Countries

2014

The authors, members of the PISA/PIRLS Task Force, provide a summary of major gender differences in performance found overall on PISA 2009, along with relevant trends since 2000. The five countries represented by the authors are highlighted in this summary, which includes findings related to the interaction of engagement and reading literacy achievement by gender. These data are foregrounded from PISA because they add further evidence of a serious global pattern of boys’ underachievement in reading and lower reading engagement relative to girls. This is followed by a discussion of what each of our five countries has done in response to the gender gap in reading literacy. The article conclud…

Influence of the Chemical Composition and Electronic Structure of Passive Films Grown on 316L SS on Their Transient Electrochemical Behavior

2004

Modifications of the passive film formed on 316L stainless steel (SS) in acidic media were performed under dc or ac polarization. The effects of these ageing treatments on the chemical composition and the electronic structure of the passive film were studied. Chemical analysis with angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed that ageing induces a net enrichment in chromium oxide in the inner part of the passive film and an increase of the thickness of the inner oxide. Semiconducting behavior of the passive films was revealed by a Mott-Schottky analysis. The passive film was considered as a dielectric with different trapping levels lying in the bandgap. The observed n- or p-type…

Women in (neuro)science: report of a meeting held at the University of Valencia, Spain, in February 2018

2018

February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. To mark this day, research centers and universities were invited by the Spanish Neuroscience Association to organize a symposium. Twenty-five centers in Spain participated in the event, with the intent of giving visibility to the existing problem of the scarcity of women compared with men in (neuro)science in positions of responsibility and command. Fourteen neuroscientists, all staff members of the University of Valencia, arranged the meeting. The morning included lectures by women neuroscientists in different phases of their career: a PhD student, a junior and a senior postdoctoral investigator, and a well-established …

Using text messages to bridge the intention-behavior gap? A pilot study on the use of text message reminders to increase objectively assessed physica…

2012

Sedentarism is a serious health concern in industrialized countries throughout the world. We examined whether a text message-based intervention, targeted at increasing daily levels of physical activity, would be more effective than a standard psychoeducational intervention and a control condition. Sixty-three individuals (43 women) with a mean age of 23.7 years participated in the study. They were randomly assigned to a psychoeducational standard intervention; an augmented intervention with additional short text messages sent to the mobile phones to remind participants of their action plans, and a control condition. Objectively assessed physical activity and self-efficacy were assessed pre-…

(Di)segni contemporanei

2018

The contribution intends to critically present some restoration interventions aligned with the most modern and evolved culture of conservation. The two interventions are carried out in Sicily on th…

Establishing mussel behaviour as a monitoring tool to measure climatic disturbances

2021

Freshwater mussels (FM) are suitable biological indicators to assess environmental stressors. Behaviour is a good parameter to measure rapid mussel’s responses. In this sense, valvometric method, that exploits the Hall sensor (real-time remote monitoring tool), has been used to measure the behavioural responses of mussels (valve opening amplitude and valve opening-closure frequency). During the last two decades, these methodologies have been used to measure the presence of the pollutants in the waterbodies. However, studies that focus on physical disturbances in the environment related to climate changes are lacking. Since future climatic scenarios in Europe predict an increase in temperatu…
