Artisti, "artistucoli" e "buoni lavoranti": Francesco Carradori e la razionalizzazione dei processi operativi nell’«Istruzione elementare per gli stu…

2022

Francesco Carradori's treatise «Istruzione elementare per gli studiosi della scultura» (1802) codifies the organization and working process within a sculpture workshop in such an exemplary manner that it is an indispensable source for understanding the marble industry in the 19th century. The author analyses Carradori's text both through its Renaissance and Baroque sources (Vasari, Cellini, Boselli) and through encyclopaedic repertories (Baldinucci, Félibien, de Jaucourt, Falconet, Levesque) and then proposes a comparison with the similar attempt by the Prussian sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow, whose essay «Die Werkstätte des Bildhauers» (1802) similarly narrates the work processes, but u…

L'ideologia imperiale di Giangiorgio Trissino tra teoria e pratica poetica nell'Italia del primo Cinquecento

2019

The very long 27 books ofL'Italia liberata dai Goti in loose verses, composed by Giangiorgio Trissino (1478-1550) in the early 1920s, found an epic poetry model that intends to respond to the crisis of the Italian states, aggravated after 1494 , and the political-cultural necessity of a founding myth, which the poet traces back to the Gothic war fought on the Italian peninsula between 535 and 553. As we will try to illustrate by rereading some passages of the epic poem, the pro-imperial option of the Vicenza literate, anachronistic and conservative, however, recognizes in the work and figure of the emperor Charles V of Habsburg ideals of unity, justice and universal peace and aligns with th…

The Residences of the Kings of Sicily, from Martin of Aragon to Ferdinand the Catholic

2016

In the context of the capital cities of the Aragonese Kindom, it would be necessary to examineand compare the cerimonial practices, behavioral codes, and uses made of the royal residences. At the same time it seems increasingly evident that, during the 15th century, the mobility of the royal court - as well as that of the aristocrats, merchants, and master builders - slowly shaped a modern, homogeneous common language which is currently defined as "Mediterranean Gothic". This paper analyzes the contribution of Sicily through the study of a number of significant buildings : the royal palace of Palermo and the Steri of Chiaromonte , the castle Maniace of Syracuse .

2011

Supernatural Elements in kipling's 'The Mark on the Beast', Conan Doyle's 'Lot no 249' and Wells' 'The Truth About Peycraft': The Gothic Short Story …

2013

The aim of the essay is the analysis of the supernatural elements in Kipling’s ‘The Mark on The Beast”, Conan Doyle’s “Lot no. 409”, Wells’ “The Truth about Peycraft” conceived of as the expression of the revitalisation of the Gothic imagery which, through the Short Story, serve to voice and exorcise late Victorian crisis, de-Constructing late Victorian identity. First, the complex nature of late Victorian Britain crisis will be deepened; second, the short story will be focused on as an independent genre from the novel which mostly epitomized Fin de Siècle literary fantastic discourse; finally, the short stories will be investigated as textual examples of what Brantlinger defines as Imperia…

ALCUNE CONSIDERAZIONI SULL’ARCHITETTURA CIVILE A SIRACUSA E NEGLI IBLEI FRA XV E XVI SECOLO

2021

The few buildings that survived the 1693 earthquake, concentrated mainly in the city of Syracuse, offer a fragmentary picture of late Gothic civil architecture in south-eastern Sicily. The analysis of the detail elements such as windows and doorawys in the facades, stairways and loggias inside the courtyards, marked by the coexistence of late Gothic and Renaissance architectural languages, highlights the adoption of decorative motifs widespread throughout Sicily and the Mediterranean context. However, many original solutions emerge, such as the square mullioned window, largely common in the city of Syracuse but also present in Scicli, probably very common in the urban landscape of the hybla…
