The influence of EU policy on local policy-making, governance and urban change. Evidence from Porto, Portugal

2021

Porto has long been a site of experimentation in the field of European urban policies, implemented through different initiatives and supported by EU funding. The paper describes the different urban regeneration experiences that have been undertaken by the city, analyses the nature of the policy instruments which have been implemented, and in what ways they relate to local policy-making, governance and development. What emerges from this analysis is a more complex perspective of the relationship between local/national/European policies, which needs a broader understanding of local processes to understand the emergence and transfer of the holistic approach promoted by the EU.

The impractical supremacy of the local identity on the worthless soils of Mappano

2016

Introduction Soil is under pressure worldwide. In Italy, in the last two decades, land consumption has reached an average rate of 8 m2, demonstrating the failure of urban planning in controlling these phenomena. Despite the renewed recognition of the central role of soil resources, which has triggered numerous initiatives and actions, soil resources are still seen as a second-tier priority. No governance body exists to coordinate initiatives to ensure that soils are appropriately represented in decision-making processes. Global Soil Partnership draws our attention to the need for coordination to avoid fragmentation of efforts and wastage of resources. Both at a global and at a local level, …

Institutional quality and resource-based economic sustainability: the mediation effects of resource governance

2022

The discovery of extractive resources is associated with multiple opportunities and unbridled optimism on achieving socio-economic development for many countries. However, the question how the host governments meet expectations of indigenous people by ensuring an ideal resource-based economic sustainability (RES) has been receiving less research attention. Using the global panel dataset of 80 resource-endowed economies from 2010 to 2017, we postulate and empirically examine the mediating effect of the resource governance (RESOGV) on the relationship between institutional quality (IQ) and RES. The ANOVA and post hoc ANOVA results revealed significant disparities in terms of IQ, RESOGV, and R…

2017

Master's thesis Business Administration BE501 - University of Agder 2017 In the last decade, most emerging markets have been associated with new investment opportunities and some growth prospects that attract private equity (hereafter, PE) investors. Regions with growing interest of PE investments include Africa and Asia. Until now, such performance implications on firms in emerging markets are limited in study. Our study focuses on the impact of PE funding on financial performance of firms in emerging markets using Ghana as a case. Using data from…

Governance of global value chains after the Covid-19 pandemic: A new wave of regionalization?

2021

The disruption of the trade and investment activities of multinational enterprises as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic has reinvigorated the debate on the configuration of global value chains (GVCs) as well as the risks and challenges associated with offshoring. This article depicts how the pandemic might affect GVC configuration by driving a trend toward a more regional footprint in industries in which resilience and reliability are critical. Such a shift would create new opportunities for reshoring, and affect both the types of upgrading trajectories and the governance systems in value chains. The article also draws from the intersection of the global-strategy and value-chain field…

On the Role of Internationalization of Firm-Level Corporate Governance – The Case of Audit Committees

2020

Motivated by agency theory and arguments from linguistic studies, we argue in this paper the internationalization of a firm’s audit committee to be associated with weaker firm-level corporate governance. Based on 2,015 publicly traded European firms from 16 countries over 2000-2018, we find the presence of foreign directors on audit committees to have a significant negative impact on financial reporting quality (FRQ). The effect is found to be weaker in countries with strong investor protection. We find linguistic differences within audit committees an important explanation for the negative influence of foreign directors on FRQ. The results are robust to alternative FRQ measures and model s…

Role of Corporate Governance in the Context of Globalization

2018

The globalization process, although criticized, is constantly growing, contributing to the internationalization of activities performed by companies and to the internationalization of markets. This also resulted in the occurrence of important changes regarding the operation and functioning of organizations, as well as regarding the operating mode of governments that have to adopt their policies to a changing market. In addition, the corporate governance, besides the ethical principles it observes, and the social responsibility also use rules and procedures aimed to increase the value of the company. Moreover, the emergence of the economic crisis showed that accounting frauds are a result of…
