Il contributo dell'Orto Botanico di Palermo allo studio tassonomico delle flore tropicali

1990

The Palermo Botanical Garden contained, since its foundation, rich collections of tropical and subtropical plants. In the past various botanists like A. Todaro, A. Borzì, G.E. Mattei, D. Lanza, V. Riccobono, A. Terracciano, carried out studies on entities growing in the Garden, describing several new taxa. Taxonomical and phytogeographical researches on the flora of the Horn of Africa have been recently undertaken.

Civic resielience : botanical gardens in North America, birth, development, and enviromental awarness

2023

The chapter explores from a historical perspective the birth of botanical gardens in North America, considered a significant part of the ecological network system and of the green and blue 'infrastructure'. This important system opposes geographical risk, which must be organically dealt with in programmes, plans and strategies that protect the landscape, prevent risks, and strengthen short-, medium- and long-term actions, also involving local Communities, integrating the vision to the different scales of intervention and projects. The Botanical Garden, seen here as an 'Open Work', has an important role not only because it preserves botanical specimens that come from all over the world, but …

I giardini borbonici di Palermo tra conservazione e valorizzazione

2021

This essay, through the presentation of an educational experience regarding two Palermo parks-gardens, aims to offer a cognitive contribution and critical reflections, for the enhancement of these assets, with particular reference to section D) of the ICOMOS-IFLA Florence Charter. The heritage of the historic gardens in Palermo and Sicily, created by the Bourbon kings in the early nineteenth century, as an integral part of their royal estates, constitutes today a precious heritage not adequately valued, not recognized as a unicum, even in relation to similar Campania heritage. This heritage includes the Parco della Favorita, established by Ferdinand IV of Bourbon in 1799 and the d' Orlèans …

Introduction to the study of the bryological flora of the Batumi Botanical Garden (Georgia)

2021

A preliminary list of 22 bryophytes growing in the Batumi Botanical garden is provided. From chorological point of view, temperate and boreo-temperate taxa prevail while with regard to ecological behaviour, mesophilous taxa are the most numerous and with respect to light requirements equivalently sciaphilous and eliophilous taxa are represented. The mosses Fissidens dubius and Cyrtomnium hymenophylloides are recorded for the first time in Georgia.

Urban gardens and institutional fences: The case of communal gardens in Turin

2017

Urban gardens take on different forms and meanings, which vary depending on the socio-economic context where they located/used and how it evolves over time. This makes a garden comparable to a micro-social ecosystem, different from other gardens and ever changing. As with every social-ecosystem resulting from a territorialisation process, there is a certain degree of social inertia that makes it difficult for outsiders with new motivations and demanding new spaces to enter into the "garden ecosystem". Drawing on existing literature and fieldwork in two urban communal gardens in Turin, the paper is mainly concerned with the spatiotemporal dimension of urban gardening, with a special focus on…

Communication Design for the Dissemination of Scientific Knowledge. Languages, Tools, Technologies, Collaborative Processes for Museum Education

2019

The Hydraulic space of the Conca d'Oro of Palermo as a paradigm of the Mediterranean water sensitive city.

2016

The orchards TAL on Palermo periurban countryside follows the Arab conception of hydraulic space. The concept of Hydraulic space combines several technologies to achieve the best use of water resources by differentiating agricultural productions in time and space and by connecting different functions (hydraulic, climatic and aesthetic) in a homogeneous system. This conception of space extends to the whole Conca d’Oro across the countryside to the heart of the historical town to the intimate domestic space in the end. During the Norman age the Zisa source used to refresh and embellish the interior of the castle before water slides towards the gardens; on the surface of Fawara-Maredolce lake …

Beyond Alternative Food Networks: Understanding Motivations to Participate in Orti Urbani in Palermo

2019

Community gardens include many benefits, and different motivations seem to underline citizens’ choices to participate. In Italy, political motivations are considered one of the main reasons for participation in community gardens (known as orti urbani). Drawing from the orti urbani experience in Palermo (the largest city in Sicily, Southern Italy), this study aims to understand the main motivations that influence citizens’ participation and to measure the effects of these motivations on fruit and vegetable consumption among participants. Findings reveal that orti urbani attract middle‐class participants who possess high amounts of cultural capital but relatively less financial capital. Among…

An interpretive framework for assessing and monitoring the sustainability of school gardens

2016

School gardens are, increasingly, an integral part of projects aiming to promote nutritional education and environmental sustainability in many countries throughout the world. In the late 1950s, FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) had already developed projects to improve the dietary intake and behavior through school and community gardens. However, notwithstanding decades of experience, real proof of how these programs contribute to improving sustainability has not been well-documented, and reported findings have mostly been anecdotal. Therefore, it is important to begin a process of collecting and monitoring data to quantify the results and …
