At the end of the 19th century, the city of Palermo boasted a tradition of steel elements that could include the most beautiful railings and light steel structures of the time. The paper shows how the technological, formal and spatial aspects of the metallic construction was derived by the application of Central Europe areas examples to the local reality, providing notions on designs, experimentations and originalities. Previous research has suggested that activities such as community gardens could offer a wide range of health benefits. The aim of the article is to systematically review the available literature to analyse the magnitude of the phenomenon, the geographical distribution, and the main characteristics in terms of health outcomes and target populations. The search addresses the question whether the activity in community gardens improves health and well-being outcomes of individuals. Transport planning as suggested in John Claudius Loudon’s 1829 plan for London

ABSTRACTWe consider Scottish landscape gardener J.C. Loudon’s already well-documented 1829 plan for a system of successive green belts around London. Our perspective will be that of transport planning, given his recommendations on street layout and public transport provision. Our contention is that Loudon’s design for the Metropolis would have been theoretically inoperative if it had not been for its transport network. Beside other forward-thinking aspects already demonstrated by researchers, Loudon’s plan is remarkable for setting out a design for an integrated Metropolis based on road planning and the then barely nascent technology of railways.

A study of the charophytes collected by Eduardo Reyes Prósper in the period 1904–1906 and kept in the herbarium of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid (MA-ALGAE) is carried out. Reyes Prósper’s herbarium consists of 112 sheets, which had not been revised until now, among which are the type materials of Lamprothamnus aragonensis Reyes y Prosper, Lamprothamnus toletanus Reyes y Prosper and Tolypella giennensis Reyes y Prosper, of which their lectotypes are here designated.

ABSTRACT.– Amongst the Sicilian historical gardens it is merited to remember the ornamental garden design of Villa Florio- Pignatelli, situated in the western periphery of Palermo. The building, and probably the garden too, are from the second half of the 18. century. This article contains the result of a cognitive study of its history, architecture and vegetal composition, based on field studies in the garden itself, on bibliographical and archival work. In 1838 it was sold by the Duke of Cumia to Vincenzo Florio, who in following conceded it to his son Ignazio. Da un manoscritto databile intorno al 1550 e un saggio a stampa sulle feste reali celebrate a Palermo, pubblicato nel 1703, sappiamo dell'esistenza di un labirinto nel giardino dell'aristocratico Giovan Tomaso Moncada, costruito negli anni settanta o negli anni ottanta del XV secolo nella campagna vicino Palermo. Si tratta della scena in cui ebbe luogo un ricco banchetto offerto al Viceré Ferdinando de Acuña.
