The Slave Coasts. Transnational Sexual Exploitation from Nigeria to Italy. From human trafficking to human rights

2019

This research intends to open a global debate on the current strong link between migration and prostitution on the basis of the reality observed in Palermo in the timespan 2015-2017. The main three elements emerging from the analysis are criminality, poverty and exploitation. As data suggests, Italy is the favorite destination of the Nigerian sexual exploitation market. In particular, Sicily plays a major role in the sexual exploitation ring involving Nigerian migrants, besides headquartering the Italian as well the Nigerian mafia. The agreement between Cosa Nostra (Sicilian Mafia) and the two organizations known as Black Axe and Eye (Nigerian mafia) represents the starting point for sexual…

Through Different Eyes. Feminine Science and Literature in Early Modern Culture

2016

The question of a dominant model of vision will be at stake in this essay, which will try to provoke other questions on the ways in which non-dominant models of vision have tried to spread out in a particularly revolutionary and dramatic period. This century is the 17th and the non-dominant model of vision is that of the female gaze. Particularly the works of three English writers – Margaret Cavendish, Aphra Behn, Eliza Haywood – and their commitment with the matter of gaze will be analysed.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Racconti di silenzi e di anarchie

2008

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935), one of the greatest female figures of social, cultural and literary fin-de-siècle history, is generally mentioned for her wide contributions given to the feminist movement during the first decades of the XX century. The narrative traits of some of her short stories, collected in the volume also in their Italian translation (all of them but “The Yellow Wallpaper” are the first Italian translation), are of great value in so far as they are closely linked to contemporary age both from a thematic and formal point of view. The short stories, besides focussing on crucial aspects of the trans-formation of the gender relationship, are instrumental in interrupti…

Whose Turn Is It? Problems of Reconciling Family and Work in Dual-Career Couples.

2015

The work-family life conflict affects various aspects of dual-career families. Parenthood and the work-family life balance lead to an overload of responsibility and disparity at the expense of women, on a private as well as on a social level. In our research, we examined WIF (work to family) and FIW (family to work) conflicts in a sample of 483 dual-career couples. The main results underline an increase in familiar duties concerning child birth and childcare, as associated with the traditional work-family life balance strategy. The data seems to reflect differences in traditional roles between public-male- breadwinner and private-female-homemaker.
