Fitting linear models and generalized linear models with large data sets in R
2009
We present an estimating algorithm to fit linear and generalized linear models not involving the QR decomposition. Some new R functions are presented and discussed. For large data sets, comparisons with respect to the well-known lm() and glm(), as well as to biglm() and bigglm() from the package biglm, show that the proposed functions speed up computation while preserving numerical stability and accuracy
Generalized Entropies, Variance and Applications
2020
The generalized cumulative residual entropy is a recently defined dispersion measure. In this paper, we obtain some further results for such a measure, in relation to the generalized cumulative residual entropy and the variance of random lifetimes. We show that it has an intimate connection with the non-homogeneous Poisson process. We also get new expressions, bounds and stochastic comparisons involving such measures. Moreover, the dynamic version of the mentioned notions is studied through the residual lifetimes and suitable aging notions. In this framework we achieve some findings of interest in reliability theory, such as a characterization for the exponential distribution, various resul…

Simplified Formulation of Solution for Beams on Winkler Foundation allowing Discontinuities due to Loads and Constraints
2009
The paper discusses material for a course in Structural Mechanics addressed to second-Year Civil Engineering students. The response of beams on a Winkler foundation characterized by discontinuities in both the displacements (deflections and/or slopes) and forces (internal forces and/or loads) is studied. In particular, a simplified formulation for the solution of the discontinuous differential equation governing this problem is given. In some cases, the formulation is able to give the exact solution in a closed form. This is made possible through the use of the generalized functions, such as the well-known Unit Step Function and the Dirac delta function. The cases of discontinuities due to …
Random Stability of an Additive-Quadratic-Quartic Functional Equation
2010
Using the fixed point method, we prove the generalized Hyers-Ulam stability of the following additive-quadratic-quartic functional equation f(x+2y)+f(x−2y)=2f(x+y)+2f(−x−y)+2f(x−y)+2f(y−x)−4f(−x)−2f(x)+f(2y)+f(−2y)−4f(y)−4f(−y) in complete random normed spaces.
Special Issue on Ciric type fixed point theorems

Professor Ljubomir Ćirić was born on August 13, 1935 in Resnik, environmentof the Niš, in Serbia. Primary, secondary and university education Professor Ćirić received in Belgrade, where he completed his Mr Sci and his Dr Sci in 1969. His fields of specialization are Fixed point theory and Nonlinear analysis. He has been founder of different directions in the theory of fixed points, which and in today's time are in the full development. During the past 45 years, he has given significant contributions to these areas. We want point out that his works have been published and cited in prestigious international journals. Two of his work has been cited in the Web of Science over 560 times, each ove…
Generalized coherence and connection property of imprecise conditional previsions.
2008
In this paper we consider imprecise conditional prevision assessments on random quantities with finite set of possible values. We use a notion of generalized coherence which is based on the coherence principle of de Finetti. We consider the checking of g-coherence, by extending some previous results obtained for imprecise conditional probability assessments. Then, we study a connection property of interval-valued gcoherent prevision assessments, by extending a result given in a previous paper for precise assessments.
On general conditional random quantities
2009
In the first part of this paper, recalling a general discussion on iterated conditioning given by de Finetti in the appendix of his book, vol. 2, we give a representation of a conditional random quantity $X|HK$ as $(X|H)|K$. In this way, we obtain the classical formula $\pr{(XH|K)} =\pr{(X|HK)P(H|K)}$, by simply using linearity of prevision. Then, we consider the notion of general conditional prevision $\pr(X|Y)$, where $X$ and $Y$ are two random quantities, introduced in 1990 in a paper by Lad and Dickey. After recalling the case where $Y$ is an event, we consider the case of discrete finite random quantities and we make some critical comments and examples. We give a notion of coherence fo…
On Rao Score and Pearson X2 Statistics in Generalized Linear Models
2005
The identity of the Rao score and PearsonX 2 statistics is well known in the areas where the latter was first introduced: goodness-of-fit in contingency tables and binary responses. We show in this paper that the same identity holds when the two statistics are used for testing goodness-of-fit of Generalized Linear Models. We also highlight the connections that exist between the two statistics when they are used for the comparison of nested models. Finally, we discuss some merits of these unifying results.
