Hierarchical control with virtual resistance optimization for efficiency enhancement and State-of-Charge balancing in DC microgrids

2015

This paper proposes a hierarchical control scheme which applies optimization method into DC microgrids in order to improve the system overall efficiency while considering the State-of-Charge (SoC) balancing at the same time. Primary droop controller, secondary voltage restoration controller and tertiary optimization tool formulate the complete hierarchical control system. Virtual resistances are taken as the decision variables for achieving the objective. simulation results are presented to verify the proposed approach.

A genetic system based on simulated crossover of sequences of two-bit genes

2006

AbstractWe introduce a genetic model based on simulated crossover of fixed sequences of two-bit genes. Results are(1)a lower bound on population size is exhibited such that a transition takes the stochastic finite population genetic system near the next state of the deterministic infinite population genetic system (provided both begin in the same state);(2)states and dynamics of the deterministic infinite population genetic system are derived for arbitrary (finite) fitness functions (expressed in terms of multivariate polynomials);(3)in the case of quadratic fitness defined by weight matrices with m nonnull entries it is shown that each state transition can be implemented in time O(m+l), wh…

Traffic fundamentals for A22 Brenner freeway by microsimulation models.

An advanced pavement management system based on a genetic algorithm for a motorway network

2013

Maintenance and improvement, through the rehabilitation, of the road infrastructure is a strategic and priority objective for road agencies, nevertheless the economic resources required are often inadequate. Within road management, the pavement management system (PMS) plays an essential role because of both the money needed and the performance that should be provided in terms of safety, ride quality and transport cost. The PMS is based on searching for a balanced solution between the lowest cost and the increased level of performance (i.e. pavement condition). In this paper a PMS multi-objective optimization method, was proposed, using a genetic algorithm (GA) to identify the best solution …

A non dominated ranking Multi Objective Genetic Algorithm and electre method for unequal area facility layout problems

2013

The unequal area facility layout problem (UA-FLP) comprises a class of extremely difficult and widely applicable optimization problems arising in diverse areas and meeting the requirements for real-world applications. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have recently proven their effectiveness in finding (sub) optimal solutions to many NP-hard problems such as UA-FLP. A main issue in such approach is related to the genetic encoding and to the evolutionary mechanism implemented, which must allow the efficient exploration of a wide solution space, preserving the feasibility of the solutions and ensuring the convergence towards the optimum. In addition, in realistic situations where several design issues…

Design and Digital Fabrication of a Parametric Joint for Bamboo Sustainable Structures

2019

The study deepens the design of a joining system for bamboo spatial structure by proposing new and advanced solutions that guarantee maximum freedom of composition to the designer. The joint allows to determine and control parametrically the adaptability to any spatial grid configuration of culms with heterogeneous dimensions. Despite the bamboo being one of the main natural building materials in the field of sustainable architecture, currently, it is not used enough due to the lack of adequate connection systems. Bamboo is a rapidly growing renewable resource, naturally available, which is quite strong and lends itself to structural applications. The paper proposes an innovative approach t…

The use of genetic algorithms to solve the allocation problems in the life cycle inventory

2013

One of the most controversial issues in the development of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) is the allocation procedure, which consists in the partition and distribution of economic flows and environmental burdens among to each of the products of a multi-output system. Because of the use of the allocation represents a source of uncertainty in the LCI results, the authors present a new approach based on genetic algorithms (GAs) to solve the multi-output systems characterized by a rectangular matrix of technological coefficients, without using computational methods such as the allocation procedure. In this Chapter, the GAs' approach is applied to an ancillary case study related to a cogeneration pr…

Assessment of Classifiers and Remote Sensing Features of Hyperspectral Imagery and Stereo-Photogrammetric Point Clouds for Recognition of Tree Specie…

2018

Recognition of tree species and geospatial information on tree species composition is essential for forest management. In this study, tree species recognition was examined using hyperspectral imagery from visible to near-infrared (VNIR) and short-wave infrared (SWIR) camera sensors in combination with a 3D photogrammetric canopy surface model based on RGB camera stereo-imagery. An arboretum with a diverse selection of 26 tree species from 14 genera was used as a test area. Aerial hyperspectral imagery and high spatial resolution photogrammetric color imagery were acquired from the test area using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) borne sensors. Hyperspectral imagery was processed to calibrated …

Estimation of the elastic parameters of human liver biomechanical models by means of medical images and evolutionary computation.

2013

This paper presents a method to computationally estimate the elastic parameters of two biomechanical models proposed for the human liver. The method is aimed at avoiding the invasive measurement of its mechanical response. The chosen models are a second order Mooney–Rivlin model and an Ogden model. A novel error function, the geometric similarity function (GSF), is formulated using similarity coefficients widely applied in the field of medical imaging (Jaccard coefficient and Hausdorff coefficient). This function is used to compare two 3D images. One of them corresponds to a reference deformation carried out over a finite element (FE) mesh of a human liver from a computer tomography image, …
