Mediterranean Neighbourhoods: Is There an Alternative Governance Model for Local Identities?

2013

Back in 2002, Le Galès acknowledged that European cities are composed of increasingly diverse social and cultural groups. As Beck and many others state, most world cities are experiencing a deep change, due to cosmopolitanism and globalization. However, there is one scale of analysis that might at first appear entirely unrelated to the new emerging spatialities (conurbations, city regions, post-metropolises). This scale is the neighbourhood, which looks like a relic of a now lost time. The authors believe that neighbourhoods host the majority of urban social (sometimes ‘insurgent’) movements, along with interesting negotiations of governance processes: therefore, they cannot be rejected as …

Primi risultati su alcune grotte ipogeniche della Sicilia

2012

Hillslope degradation in representative Italian areas. Just soil erosion risk or opportunity for development?

2018

In recent years, much research have dealt with the impact of human and climate change on the morpho-evolution of Mediterranean catchments characterized by high ecological and cultural value. In this paper, we speculated how humans can influence hillslope degradation by reviewing the relationships between denudation processes and land use changes in some representative areas located in different Italian regions (i.e., Liguria, Tuscany, Basilicata, and Sicily). The selected study cases are characterized by different climatic and geological features, land use, and land management and can be considered indicative of the hillslope degradation issues that affected the Apennines during the last ce…

Esplorare la povertà urbana in una prospettiva mediterranea: il caso del quartiere CEP a Palermo

2020

The paper addresses the issue of the multiple dimensions of urban poverty through mixed analyses carried out in the CEP neighborhood of Palermo. The article tries to avoid incurring the dichotomy between the Global North and South and adopts a Mediterranean perspective, attempting to describe the neighborhood from below and starting from the voices of its youngest inhabitants. In light of the most recent pandemic events, the issue of urban poverty deserves to be explored with renewed academic debates.

Il paesaggio e la nazione plurale: The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert

2021

The article is part of the volume Configurazioni e trasfigurazioni. Discorsi sul paesaggio mediato. The book asks to question the relationship between the landscape and its worlds (literary, cinematographic, virtual). The fundamental question of the article is how one can grasp the sense of the landscape of the Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert (1994). Therefore, analyzing the famous film, the essay wants to correlate the sense of the landscape and the idea of nation. The landscape as a symbol is the frame of reference that will be examined, in particular the line of thought that imagines the landscape as the mental construction of a subject. In this way it wil…

FRAMMENTI DI PAESAGGIO CULTURALE: I RUDERI DI GIBELLINA

2020

The present contribution intends to propose an epistemological reflection on the links relationships that interweave the map, cultural heritage, landscape, and places. We have indentified an interpretative horizon that intersects the scientific geographic debate with the literary subject and we have proposed a specific reading of the site of Old Gibellina, in Sicily, where reality and representation seem to converge. In 1968 Gibellina was razed to the ground by a seism. The artist Alberto Burri covered the ruins with the concrete realising the “Grande Cretto”. In our perspective, the Cretto represents a unique place: it is a full size map, it is landscape, it is world at the same time. What…

Geomorphology of the urban area of Palermo (Italy)

2020

The results of a geomorphological study carried out in the urban area of Palermo are summarized in a thematic map. Field survey, analysis of aerial photographs and topographic maps, consultation of historical documents and maps, stratigraphic and topographic reconstruction from numerous wells and subsoil data, and bibliographic search were performed, in order to display the geomorphological changes produced by man over time in a densely populated area and to define the Anthropocene of the study area. Palermo town rises along large marine terrace surfaces cut by small river valleys and bordered by wide degraded and abandoned coastal cliffs. Over the last 2700 years, this area was affected by…
