On multiples of divisors associated to Veronese embeddings with defective secant variety

2009

In this note we consider multiples aD, where D is a divisor of the blow-up of P^n along points in general position which appears in the Alexander and Hirschowitz list of Veronese embeddings having defective secant varieties. In particular we show that there is such a D with h^1(X,D) > 0 and h^1(X,2D) = 0.

Development of an earth observation processing chain for crop bio-physical parameters at local scale

2015

This paper proposes a full Earth observation processing chaing for biophysical parameter estimation at local scales. In particular, we focus on the Leaf Area Index (LAI) as an essential climate variable required for the monitoring and modeling of land surfaces at local scale. The main goal of this study is tied to the use of optical satellite images to retrieve Earth Observation (EO) biophysical parameters able to describe the spatio-temporal changes in agro-ecosystems at local scale. The objective of this work is two-fold: (i) to set up and update the EO products processing chain at high resolution (local) scale; and (ii) derive multitemporal LAI maps at 30 m resolution to be fed into a cr…

Low-dimensional copper(II) complexes with the trinucleating ligand 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamine)-1,3,5-triazine: synthesis, crystal structures, and m…

2010

The preparation and structural characterization of three new copper(II) complexes of formula [Cu(3)(dipyatriz)(2)(H(2)O)(3)](ClO(4))(6) x 2 H(2)O (1), {[Cu(4)(dipyatriz)(2)(H(2)O)(2)(NO(3))(2)(ox)(2)](NO(3))(2) x 2 H(2)O}(n) (2), and [Cu(6)(dipyatriz)(2)(H(2)O)(9)(NO(3))(3)(ox)(3)](NO(3))(3) x 4 H(2)O (3) [dipyatriz = 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamine)-1,3,5-triazine and ox = oxalate] are reported. The structure of 1 consists of trinuclear units [Cu(3)(dipyatriz)(2)(H(2)O)(3)](6+) and uncoordinated perchlorate anions. The two dipyatriz molecules in 1 act as tris-bidentate ligands with the triazine cores being in a quasi eclipsed conformation. Each copper atom in 1 exhibits a distorted square pyr…

Eigenexpressions: Emotion Recognition Using Multiple Eigenspaces

2013

This paper presents an appearance-based holistic method for expression recognition. A two stage supervised learning approach is used. At the first stage, training images are used to compute one subspace per expression. At the second stage, the same images are used to train a classifier. In this step, Euclidean distances from each image to each particular subspace are used as the input to the classifier. The resulting system significantly outperforms the baseline eigenfaces method on the Cohn-Kanade data set, with performance gains in the range 10%-20%.

Performance Comparison of Electrical Motors equipped with slightly Asymmetrical Windings

2019

This paper presents a comparison between the performances of electrical machines equipped with slightly asymmetrical windings. More in detail, by modifying the stator geometry of an Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine equipped with a symmetrical winding configuration, other two slightly asymmetrical winding topologies are obtained. The three models are, then, analyzed by means of a finite element method (FEM) and the related results are compared in terms of cogging torque, static characteristics and leakage factor. The obtained results demonstrate that the adoption of slightly asymmetrical windings could be an interesting alternative solution during the design stage of electrical …

Electric relaxation and Mn3+/Mn4+ charge transfer in Fe-doped Bi12MnO20–BiMn2O5 structural self-composite

2016

Fe-doped Bi12MnO20–BiMn2O5 ceramics was sintered at 1130 K for 6 h in ambient air. Two centro-symmetric phases formed thermodynamically stable self-composite material that was deduced from X-ray pattern analysis. The lattice parameters were a = 10.147(8) Å—for the cubic I23 Bi12MnO20 phase; and a = 7.545(4) Å, b = 8.538(1) Å, c = 5.758(3) Å—for the orthorhombic Pbam BiMn2O5 phase. The 57Fe Mössbauer spectrum, recorded at room temperature, has shown pure electronic quadrupolar split. The major doublets reflected the occurrence of Fe3+ ions distributed in two sites, i.e., octahedral Fe4+O6 and square pyramidal Fe3+O5, with preferential occupation of the pyramidal sites, that was consistent wi…

Vacuum induced berry phase: Theory and experimental proposal

2003

We investigate quantum effects in geometric phases arising when a two-level system is interacting with a quantized electromagnetic field. When the system is adiabatically driven along a closed loop in the parameter space, signatures of the field quantization are observable in the geometric phase. We propose a feasible experiment to measure these effects in cavity QED and also analyse the semi-classical limit, recovering the usual Berry phase results.
