Dynamics of nanoparticles in a supercooled liquid
2008
The dynamic properties of nanoparticles suspended in a supercooled glass forming liquid are studied by x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. While at high temperatures the particles undergo Brownian motion the measurements closer to the glass transition indicate hyperdiffusive behavior. In this state the dynamics is independent of the local structural arrangement of nanoparticles, suggesting a cooperative behavior governed by the near-vitreous solvent.

Laminated Glass Members in Compression: Experiments and Modeling
2014
It is well known that structural glass members are made by assembling thin laminated panels, which can be connected with different bonding techniques; for instance, with steel devices or with structural adhesives. The latter are very commonly used because they do not reduce the transparency of the member and make it possible to avoid stress concentrations because of the presence of holes. This technique is used to make up columns in glazing structures and different applications of the technique can be found in contemporary architecture. As evidenced by the literature, one of the most important problems in such members is caused by buckling phenomena, resulting from the slenderness of the pa…
Polyamorphic transformation induced by electron irradiation ina-SiO2glass
2009
We report a study by electron paramagnetic resonance of amorphous silicon dioxide $(a{\text{-SiO}}_{2})$ irradiated by 2.5 MeV electrons in the dose range from $1.2\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{3}$ to $5\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}\text{ }\text{kGy}$. By measuring the change in the splitting of the primary $^{29}\text{S}\text{i}$ hyperfine doublet of the ${E}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ centers we evidenced an irradiation induced local (around the defects) densification of $a{\text{-SiO}}_{2}$. Our data show that the local degree of densification of the materials is significantly higher than that obtained by mean density measurements, suggesting that the …
Effect of oxygen deficiency on the radiation sensitivity of sol-gel Ge-doped amorphous SiO2
2008
We report experimental investigation by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements of room temperature γ-ray irradiation effects in sol-gel Ge doped amorphous SiO2. We used materials with Ge content from 10 up to 104 part per million (ppm) mol obtained with different preparations. These latter gave rise to samples characterized by different extents of oxygen deficiency, estimated from the absorption band at ~5.15 eV of the Ge oxygen deficient centers (GeODC(II)). The irradiation at doses up to ~400 kGy induces the E'-Ge, Ge(1) and Ge(2) paramagnetic centers around g ~ 2 with concentrations depending on Ge and on GeODC(II) content. We found correlation between Ge(2) and GeODC(II) con…
From equilibrium to steady state: The transient dynamics of colloidal liquids under shear
2008
We investigate stresses and particle motion during the start up of flow in a colloidal dispersion close to arrest into a glassy state. A combination of molecular dynamics simulation, mode coupling theory and confocal microscopy experiment is used to investigate the origins of the widely observed stress overshoot and (previously not reported) super-diffusive motion in the transient dynamics. A link between the macro-rheological stress versus strain curves and the microscopic particle motion is established. Negative correlations in the transient auto-correlation function of the potential stresses are found responsible for both phenomena, and arise even for homogeneous flows and almost Gaussia…

Mechanism of crystallization of pyroxene-based glass-ceramic glazes
2004
Abstract The mechanism of crystallization of a powdered glass with composition in the pyroxene crystallization primary field within the CaO–MgO–Al 2 O 3 –SiO 2 quaternary system and containing some additives was studied. The crystallization sequence was compared with that from the same base glass without additives. After a short thermal anneal both powdered glasses showed phase separation. Further thermal treatment gave rise to the crystallization of pyroxene. Anorthite as secondary crystalline phase was also detected in the quaternary glass (without additives). The starting crystallization in the glass with additives took place in the outer surface of glass particles probably in the immisc…
Metallophthalocyanines as optical active dopants in borate glass
2021
Abstract B2O3 – phthalocyanine composites (B2O3@MPc) were synthesized at 410 °C by sintering boron trioxide doped with base metal-free phthalocyanine (H2Pc) and/or its complexes of Mg, Zn, Gd (Pc = C32H16N8, phthalocyanine ligand, M = metal ion). The glassy products were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM, EDS) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) which confirmed the incorporation of the respective phthalocyanines into the amorphous borate matrix. FTIR results suggested a possible impact of the phthalocyanine dopants on the final solid structure of the glassy matrix. The UV-excited composites emitted a pronounced blue phosphorescence featured by a two-step quenching pr…
A comparative study of fatigue behaviour of flax/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites
2012
Experimental investigations on flax and glass fabrics reinforced epoxy specimens, i.e. FFRE and GFRE, submitted to fatigue tests are presented in this paper. Samples having [0/90]3S and [±45]3S stacking sequences, with similar fibre volume fractions have been tested under tension–tension fatigue loading. The specific stress-number of cycles to failure (S–N) curves, show that for the [0/90]3S specimens, FFRE have lower fatigue endurance than GFRE, but the [±45]3S FFRE specimens offer better specific fatigue endurance than similar GFRE, in the studied life range (<2 × 10^6). Overall, the three-stage stiffness degradation is observed in all cases except for [0/90]3S FFRE specimens, which prese…
