Hydrogen-Related Paramagnetic Centers in Ge-Doped Sol-Gel Silica Induced by γ-Ray Irradiation

We have studied the generation mechanisms of H(II) paramagnetic centers in Ge-doped silica by investigating up to 104 mol ppm sol-gel Ge-doped silica materials. We have considered materials with the same concentrations of Ge but that are produced by two different densification routes that give rise to different concentrations of Ge-related oxygen deficient centers (GeODC(II)). These centers are characterized by an optical absorption band at ∼5.2 eV (B2 β band) and two related emissions at ∼3.2 eV and ∼4.3 eV. Luminescence of silicon Dioxide — silica glass, α-quartz and stishovite

Abstract This paper compares the luminescence of different modifications of silicon dioxide — silica glass, α-quartz crystal and dense octahedron structured stishovite crystal. Under x-ray irradiation of pure silica glass and pure α-quartz crystal, only the luminescence of self-trapped exciton (STE) is detected, excitable only in the range of intrinsic absorption. No STE luminescence was detected in stishovite since, even though its luminescence is excitable below the optical gap, it could not be ascribed to a self-trapped exciton. Dielectric properties of (KBr)1-x (KCN)x

The temperature dependence of the dielectric constant of (KBr)1−x (KCN) x was measured at frequencies of 87.5 Hz, 1, 10 and 100 kHz for concentrations ofx=0, 0.01, 0.04, 0.14, 0.25, and 0.50. Both the real and the imaginary part showed maxima at characteristic temperatures which depend on the measuring frequency and the concentration. The results are analogous to the behaviour of the magnetic susceptibility in spin glasses and support the existence of an orientational glass state.

Exchange bias (EB) effect has been vigorously researched for many years due to its possible applications in information storage and spintronics, especially in spin valves for magnetic recording devices. Even though many models have been expounded to this day, they do not prove convincingly the origins of EB effect. The relaxation dynamics of many disordered systems, such as structural glasses, proteins, granular materials or spin glasses, is not completely frozen even at very low temperatures. This residual motion leads to a change of the properties of the material, a process commonly called aging. Despite recent advances in the theoretical description of such aging processes, the microscopic mechanisms leading to the aging dynamics are still a matter of dispute. Magnetic properties of Cd–Mg–Tb quasicrystal

Abstract The magnetic properties of an icosahedral Cd–Mg–Tb quasicrystal were studied by dc magnetization and thermoremanent magnetization time decay measurements. An unusual temperature dependence of the susceptibility below freezing temperature can be attributed to the inhomogeneous sample structure. In addition to the quasicrystalline portion which exhibits a spin-glass transition at 12.5 K a part of the sample behaves like a paramagnet. During aging of the sample in air the spin-glass part transforms into the paramagnetic one. The linear M ∝ H dependence of the thermoremanent magnetization time decay on magnetic field is quite different as compared to canonical spin glasses.

Stable two -dimensional spatial solitons in heavy metal oxide glasses

In this Communication, a stable self-confined propagation with ps near-infrared (NIR) pulses and over several Rayleigh lengths is demonstrated for the first time . Multiphoton absorption is shown to saturate the self-focusing response in a novel glass of the ternary system Nb2O5-O2-PbO (NPG) exhibiting a high refractive index (2-2.1) in the NIR and an energy gap of 3.52 eV. NPG belongs to the family of heavy metal oxides, widely studied for its fast and high nonlinearity in the infrared.

Realization and drive tests of active thin glass x-ray mirrors

A technique to obtain lightweight and high-resolution focusing mirror segments for large aperture X-ray telescopes is the hot slumping of thin glass foils. In this approach, already successfully experimented to manufacture the optics of the NuSTAR X-ray telescope, thin glasses are formed at high temperature onto a precisely figured mould. The formed glass foils are subsequently stacked onto a stiff backplane with a common axis and focus to form an XOU (X-ray Optical Unit), to be later integrated in the telescope optic structure. We have developed PC controlled dot-matrix holographic recording system based on the CW diode pumped YAG:Nd SHG laser (wavelength 532 nm, power 30mW,) modulated electronically with TTL signals. Two-beam technique has been used with convergence angle 30o and PC controlled incident beam plane rotation 0-360o. Optical system consists of beam splitter, 40mm focus length forming cylindrical lens and 40mm focusing lens.
