Long-term phenological data set of multi-taxonomic groups, agrarian activities, and abiotic parameters from Latvia, northern Europe

2021

A phenological data set collected by citizen-scientists from 1970 to 2018 in Latvia is presented, comprising almost 47,000 individual observations of eight taxonomical groups, in addition to agrarian activities and abiotic parameters, covering in total 159 different phenological phases. These original data published offline in annual issues of the Nature and History Calendar (in Latvian, Dabas un vēstures kalendārs) have been digitized, harmonized and geo-referenced. Overall, the possible use of such data is extensive, as phenological data are excellent bioindicators for characterising climate change and can be used for the elaboration of adaptation strategies in agriculture, forestry, and …

Desalination. From a questioned resource to a necessary and strategic resource during drought situations for the water supply in the Segura River Bas…

2018

Urban Stormwater Management, A Tool for Adapting to Climate Change: From Risk to Resource

2020

The effects of climate change on rainfall in the Mediterranean region are manifested in an overall decreasing trend, and greater irregularity in annual volumes and the city of Alicante is no exception. In addition, there has also been a spread of the urbanised area, which has led to an increase in the flood risk in urban areas (due to a greater runoff and the occupation of flood hazard areas) and drought events due to an increase in the water demand. In light of these new scenarios, the Mediterranean cities should design adaptation systems based on rainwater harvesting within the framework of a circular economy. This study analyses the integration of rainwater in flood and water demand mana…

Climate change impact on extrinsic and intrinsic competition between egg parasitoids

2012

Climate changing is a real phenomenon and the last decade was the warmest decade ever. The impact of climate change on animal communities is complex, affecting species interactions in all trophic levels, in different ways and in different bio-geographic zones. Here we will discuss about the possible effects of climate changes in shaping the competition between egg parasitoid species to consume the same hosts. Egg parasitoids are important biological control agents due to their ability to kill the pest before the crop-feeding stages emerge. Competitive effects can be divided in “extrinsic competition”, the indirect interactions between adult females searching for hosts, and “intrinsic compet…

ROLE OF BEHAVIOUR IN MARINE ORGANISMS: POTENTIAL EFFECTS UNDER FUTURE OCEAN CONDITIONS.

2021

Over the last 250 years, the intensive burning of fossil fuels along with industrial processes and land uses (e.g. clearing forests and agriculture) has contributed to an increase in atmospheric CO2 from approximately 280 to 410 ppm, with a further increase (from 730 to 1020 ppm) projected by the end of this century. About 30% of the anthropogenic CO2 has been absorbed by the ocean, with a consequent decrease of the ocean’s surface pH causing a phenomenon better known as Ocean Acidification (OA). The average pH of the surface ocean has declined from 8.2 by 0.1 units since pre-industrial times as a result of CO2 emissions and a further reduction of 0.3–0.5 pH units is expected to occur by th…

The rise of thermophilic sea urchins and the expansion of barren grounds in the Mediterranean Sea

2011

Recent ecological studies have shown a strong relation between temperature, echinoids and their grazing effects on macro-algal communities. In this study, we speculate that climate warming may result in an increasingly favourable environment for the reproduction and development of the sea urchin Arbacia lixula. The relationship between increased A. lixula density and the extent of barren grounds in the Mediterranean Sea is also discussed.

Ecological impacts of global warming and water abstraction on lakes and reservoirs due to changes in water level and related changes in salinity

2015

According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report released in September 2014, unprecedented changes in temperature and precipitation patterns have been recorded globally in recent decades and further change is predicted to occur in the near future, mainly as the result of human activity. In particular, projections show that the Mediterranean climate zone will be markedly affected with significant implications for lake water levels and salinity. This may be exacerbated by increased demands for irrigation water. Based on long-term data from seven lakes and reservoirs covering a geographical gradient of 52 of latitudes and a literature review, we discuss how changes in water le…

Larval Development of Arbacia lixula (Linneo, 1758) in two Marine Protected Area: preliminary data.

2010

The sea urchin Arbacia lixula is a crucial species in driving the algal assemblages dynamic of the infralittoral zone. A. lixula is considered a thermophilic species and its increase in abundance in western Mediterranean waters, probably is due to an increase in seawater temperature. The aim of this study was to examine the reproductive success of A. lixula by larval development. The study was conducted within two Sicilian MPA (Capo Gallo-Isola delle Femmine and Ustica), characterized by photophilic algae, the same exposure and seawater temperature. In each area, twenty random specimens was sampled from May to September 2010, and mature gametes were collected from six males and six females …
