Memetic Engineering for Permanent Education in Line with Sustainable Growth
2012
Given the recent point of view of the European Commission regarding the implementation of a new strategy for sustainable growth and jobs, this paper emphasises the opportunity and urgency of supporting the EU 2020 strategy, providing an appropriate educational tool for the knowledge society. The main objectives are: a. adapting memetic engineering expressed in terms of General System Theory to the teaching component of permanent education based on bounded rationality and "Just in Time"as key tools for fighting cognitive chaoplexity in the post-industrial era; b. facilitating the use of memetic engineering based on its double-faceted nature: as both positive and negative feedback; c. extendi…
Training Deep Neural Networks with Novel Metaheuristic Algorithms for Fatigue Crack Growth Prediction in Aluminum Aircraft Alloys
2022
Fatigue cracks are a major defect in metal alloys, and specifically, their study poses defect evaluation challenges in aluminum aircraft alloys. Existing inline inspection tools exhibit measurement uncertainties. The physical-based methods for crack growth prediction utilize stress analysis models and the crack growth model governed by Paris’ law. These models, when utilized for long-term crack growth prediction, yield sub-optimum solutions and pose several technical limitations to the prediction problems. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms in this study have been conducted in accordance with neural networks to accurately forecast the crack growth rates in aluminum alloys. Through ex…
The Need of a Dynamic Performance Management Approach to Foster Sustainable Organizational Development
2016
The concept of organizational growth concerns the strategic domain of management. It underlies the aptitude of an organization to attain a set of results leading to its long-term success and continuity.
A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Growth and Profit Rate Distribution: The Spanish Case
2022
We analyse the time evolution of the empirical cross-sectional distribution of firms’ profit and growth rates. In particular, we analyse the conditional properties of the empirical distributions depending on the size of the firms and the business cycle phase. In order to do so, we employ the Laplace distribution as a benchmark, further considering the Subbotin and Asymmetric Exponential Power (AEP hereafter) distributions, to capture the potential asymmetry and leptokurtosis of the empirical distribution. Our results show that the profit rates of large firms are characterised by an asymmetric Laplace distribution with parameters largely independent of the business cycle phase. Small firms, …
The body size of headstarted and wild juvenile European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis)
2018
Headstarting is a popular conservation technique in which animals are raised under artificial conditions, and then released into natural habitat. The objective of this procedure is to grow animals to a size at which they are less vulnerable to predators. However, there is still little empirical evidence for the long-term effectiveness of the technique. Therefore, we compared body size of juvenile “wild” (= not taken to artificial rearing) and headstarted European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis), from two populations (in central and western Poland). Immediately after hatching there were no differences in size of the turtles, but after seven-ten years headstarted turtles were smaller. This so…
Effects of UVB radiation exposure from the molecular to the organism level in macrophytes from shallow Mediterranean habitats
2015
Abstract The available data on the effects of UVB radiation (UVBR) are scarce for submerged macrophytes, particularly charophytes. We studied the effects of UVBR on Chara baltica, Chara hispida, Chara vulgaris, Nitella hyalina and Myriophyllum spicatum, collected from shallow Mediterranean waterbodies. In a short-term laboratory experiment, we subjected these species to three different UVBR treatments corresponding to daily biologically effective integrated doses of 0, 1 and 6 kJ m−2. The analysed response variables were DNA damage, UV-absorbing compounds (both the methanol-soluble–SUVACs- and, for the first time in charophytes, the methanol-insoluble cell wall-bound fraction–WUVACs-), the …
CRISIS: EFFECTS IN THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL FIELD
2010
This paper aims to examine how issues relating to the economic crisis on society nationally and internationally. It reflects its own analysis based on own research aspect based on several macroeconomic indicators. To this end I studied the relationship between financial crisis – the economic crisis – social crisis – political crisis.
Measuring the potential for growth in populations investing in diapause
2014
AbstractThe intrinsic rate of population increase (r) is a common performance measure in many ecological and evolutionary studies. However, in life cycles with diapause investment resources are split into a short-term (current population growth) and a long-term (population survival through periods of unsuitable habitat conditions) component, which complicates the use of r as a single performance measure. Here we propose a new measure that integrates both performance components into a single parameter, the potential intrinsic growth rate, rpot. This is the rate of increase that a population/genotype would have if no investment in diapausing stages would occur. We show that rpot can be comput…
The effects of dietary fumonisin B1 on growth and physiology of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)
2016
