SMCP: a Secure Mobile Crowdsensing Protocol for fog-based applications
2020
Abstract The possibility of performing complex data analysis through sets of cooperating personal smart devices has recently encouraged the definition of new distributed computing paradigms. The general idea behind these approaches is to move early analysis towards the edge of the network, while relying on other intermediate (fog) or remote (cloud) devices for computations of increasing complexity. Unfortunately, because both of their distributed nature and high degree of modularity, edge-fog-cloud computing systems are particularly prone to cyber security attacks that can be performed against every element of the infrastructure. In order to address this issue, in this paper we present SMCP…
Detection of a reservoir water level using shape similarity metrics
2017
The matching between reservoirs’ water edge and digital elevation model’s (DEM) contour lines allowed determining the water level at the acquisition date of satellite images. A preliminary study was conducted on the Castello dam (Magazzolo Lake), between Alessandria della Rocca and Bivona (Agrigento, south-Italy). The accuracy assessment of the technique was than evaluated from the comparison between classified and reference objects using similarity metrics about the shape, theme, edge and position, through the plugin STEP of open source software GIS. Moreover, an independent GIS technique was implemented to evaluate the water level, based on a distances’ array between existing contour line…
Living on a knife’s edge: Temporal conflicts in welfare service work
2012
This article considers the temporal variations of agency from the point of view of social and health care workers’ experiences and the social structures and practices of the contemporary public service sector. It is based on an interview study of 24 Finnish welfare service workers. The results show that the public service sector increasingly operates according to market principles and an economic-rationalistic framing of time, contrary to the relational understanding of time in care practices. To maintain their sense of self as skilled professionals, workers actively reassess and adjust their identities according to the exigencies of working life, but not without difficulties. The results …
5G IoT System for Real-Time Psycho-Acoustic Soundscape Monitoring in Smart Cities With Dynamic Computational Offloading to the Edge
2021
Environmental noise monitoring for smart cities need to be as much efficient as possible in order to mitigate its significant impact in the health of their inhabitants. 5G Internet of Things (IoT) systems offer a big opportunity to offload the computation from the sensor nodes, since it provides a series of new concepts for dynamic computing that the previous technologies did not offer. In this article, a complete 5G IoT system for psycho-acoustic monitoring has been designed and implemented using different options for offloading computation to different parts of the system. This offloading has been done by developing different functional splittings of the psycho-acoustic metrics algorithms…
Selfish vs. Unselfish Optimization of Network Creation
2005
We investigate several variants of a network creation model: a group of agents builds up a network between them while trying to keep the costs of this network small. The cost function consists of two addends, namely (i) a constant amount for each edge an agent buys and (ii) the minimum number of hops it takes sending messages to other agents. Despite the simplicity of this model, various complex network structures emerge depending on the weight between the two addends of the cost function and on the selfish or unselfish behaviour of the agents.

Shedding Light on Graphene Quantum Dots: Key Synthetic Strategies, Characterization Tools, and Cutting-Edge Applications
2021
During the last 20 years, the scientific community has shown growing interest towards carbonaceous nanomaterials due to their appealing mechanical, thermal, and optical features, depending on the specific nanoforms. Among these, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) recently emerged as one of the most promising nanomaterials due to their outstanding electrical properties, chemical stability, and intense and tunable photoluminescence, as it is witnessed by a booming number of reported applications, ranging from the biological field to the photovoltaic market. To date, a plethora of synthetic protocols have been investigated to modulate the portfolio of features that GQDs possess and to facilitate the…
