Can ECG-gated MDCT be considered an obligatory step to plan and manage a new chest-pain unit?

2007

The recent improvements in multi-detector computed tomography technology and its application in cardiac field allow to consider this non-invasive imaging technique as a promising comprehensive method for detecting significant coronary stenoses in a chest-pain unit. The possibility to use the ECG-synchronisation acquisition protocol, normally limited to the cardiac volume, for the entire thoracic vascular system should have the remarkable potential to reduce invasive and non-invasive procedures actually used to investigate acute chest pain and the number of unnecessary hospital admissions without reducing appropriate admissions in patients with chest pain.

Comprehensive cardiovascular ECG-gated MDCT as a standard diagnostic tool in patients with acute chest pain

2007

Acute myocardial infarction, pulmonary embolism, and aortic dissection are diseases associated with acute chest pain and may lead to severe morbidity and mortality. These diseases may not be trivial to diagnose in the settings of emergency room. ECG-gated multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT), already established for the assessment of pulmonary embolism and aortic dissection, provides reliable information regarding the triage of patients with acute coronary syndrome in the emergency room. MDCT recently appeared to be logistically feasible and a promising comprehensive method for the evaluation of cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain in emergency department patients. The possibility to sca…

Minimal exposure time of different LED-curing devices

2007

Abstract Objectives The purpose of the study was to investigate the shortest possible exposure time of different LED-curing devices for five different resin composites in a clinically relevant in vitro-model, where a 7 mm distance from the light guide tip to the bottom side of the cavity was compiled. Methods Resin composite samples (Tetric EvoCeram A3, Filtek Supreme XT A3B, Premise A3, CeramX Mono M5, QuiXfil) were filled in three increments of 2 mm thickness each in stainless steel moulds (O = 5 mm, h  = 6 mm, n  = 9). The samples were incrementally exposed to different blue LED-curing devices (Bluephase, Bluephase C8, Bluephase 16i/Ivoclar Vivadent, L.E.Demetron II/sds Kerr, Elipar Free…

L'ecocardiografia speckle tracking: Roadmap per la misurazione e l'utilizzo clinico

2017

Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) has recently emerged as a quantitative technique to accurately estimate myocardial function. By the analysis of the motion of speckles in the two-dimensional ultrasonic image, this technique allows a non-Doppler angle-independent objective analysis of myocardial deformation, with the possibility to quantify thickening, shortening and rotation dynamics of cardiac function. Since this technique does not require Doppler imaging, the analysis is relatively angle-independent and is marginally affected by cardiac in-plane motion artifacts. Data regarding feasibility, reproducibility and diagnostic accuracy appear to be optimal in several clinical contexts. …

Tourism, language and globalization. A linguistic representation of St. Petersburg in Lonely Planet’s web site

Teaching foreign languages for specific purposes holds an importance that, at the present time, it is extended widely to the field of the tourism industry which uses natural languages to create a shared metalanguage. The languages used to describe a tourism destination are particularly interesting because they build up a tourism’s representation of the town in order to pilot the travellers’ choices. In this context, tour guides represent an interesting example because they offer to the learner-reader the possibility to explore the richness of a foreign language. This study proposes an analysis of St. Petersburg’s tourist guide contained in the Lonely Planet web magazine in the English langu…

Congenital hypothyroidism: A 2020-2021 consensus guidelines update-An ENDO-European Reference Network initiative endorsed by the European Society for…

2021

Background: An ENDO-European Reference Network (ERN) initiative was launched that was endorsed by the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology and the European Society for Endocrinology with 22 participants from the ENDO-ERN and the two societies. The aim was to update the practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of congenital hypothyroidism (CH). A systematic literature search was conducted to identify key articles on neonatal screening, diagnosis, and management of primary and central CH. The evidence-based guidelines were graded with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation system, describing both the strength of recommendations and the quali…

Ultrasonic Guided Waves-Based Monitoring of Rail Head: Laboratory and Field Tests in Advances in Civil Engineering

2010

Recent train accidents have reaffirmed the need for developing a rail defect detection system more effective than that currently used. One of the most promising techniques in rail inspection is the use of ultrasonic guided waves and noncontact probes. A rail inspection prototype based on these concepts and devoted to the automatic damage detection of defects in rail head is the focus of this paper. The prototype includes an algorithm based on wavelet transform and outlier analysis. The discrete wavelet transform is utilized to denoise ultrasonic signals and to generate a set of relevant damage sensitive data. These data are combined into a damage index vector fed to an unsupervised learning…

Ultrasonic guided wave propagation in long bones with varying cortical thickness

2009

The propagation of ultrasonic guided wave (GW) in the long bone is very sensitive to the bones' shapes, properties and cortical thicknesses (CTh). Most of the previous studies on the GW propagation in long bones mainly focused on the bones with uniform CTh. However, it is necessary to understand the impacts of CTh variation, such as mode conversion. Therefore, an adequate analysis on GW propagating in long bones with varying CTh is essential for the precise calibration of the quantitative measurement of it. The aim of this study is to use a modified boundary element method (BEM) to analyze the GW propagation characteristics in long bones with varying CTh. Numerical analysis implemented by t…

Improved Global-Local method for ultrasonic guided wave scattering predictions in composite waveguides and defects

2022

As structures increase in complexity, both in the use of advanced materials and high-performing designs such as composite assemblies, their health assessment becomes increasingly challenging. Ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) have shown to be very promising in the inspection of large (i.e. aerospace components) attenuating (i.e. composite materials) structures and have been successfully employed for damage detection in a variety of fields. The intrinsic complex nature of UGWs, due to their dispersive behavior, combined with the structural complexity of the applications, though, requires improved inspection solutions of higher resolution and accuracy to ensure efficient and safe operations. The…
