Female reproductive factors are associated with objectively measured physical activity in middle-aged women

Physical activity improves health and may delay the onset of several chronic diseases. For women in particular, the rate of these diseases accelerates at middle age; therefore it is important to identify the determinants of health-enhancing physical activity during midlife in this population. In this study, we focused on determinants that are unique to the female sex, such as childbearing and menopause. The main objective was to characterize the level of physical activity and differences between active and inactive middle-aged Finnish women. Aposematism is the combination of a primary signal with a secondary defence that predators must learn to associate with one another. However, variation in the level of defence, both within and between species, is very common. As secondary defences influence individual fitness, this variation in quality and quantity requires an evolutionary explanation, particularly as it may or may not correlate with variation in primary signals. The persistence of intrapopulation phenotypic variation typically requires some form of balancing selection because drift and directional selection eventually erode genetic variation. Heterozygote advantage remains a classic explanation for the maintenance of genetic variation in the face of selection. Minerva Oy oli 1800- ja 1900-luvun vaihteessa Helsingissä toiminut tieteellinen antikvaarinen kirjakauppa. Tarkastelen Minerva-osakeyhtiön historiaa 1890-luvulta 1910-luvulle sen piirissä toimineiden henkilöiden kautta hyödyntämällä kollektiivibiografista menetelmää. The significance in Finland of shipping on inland waterways has been great. This is due to the topography of the country with its many lakes and to the fact that the vast waterways in their natural state were easily navigable. The construction of canals resulted in even more extensive interconnected inland waterways. This study explores the tasks of the steamships plying these internal waterways, their numbers and significance, and also changes and the reasons for these between different inland waterways, as regards different types of vessels and shipowners in the period from the 1870s to the 1960s.
