NAFLD HYPERURICEMIA
researchProduct

Hyperuricemia is associated with histological liver damage in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

2011

Background Hyperuricemia has been associated with metabolic disorders. In this line recent studies observed an independent link between higher uric acid serum levels and clinical diagnosis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Aims We aimed to assess the potential association between uric acid serum levels and histological liver damage in a homogeneous cohort of biopsy-proven NAFLD patients. Methods Consecutive NAFLD patients (n = 166), assessed by liver biopsy (Kleiner score), anthropometric, biochemical and metabolic features, were included. Enzymatic colorimetric test was used for serum uric acid assays (Roche Diagnostics GmbH, Mannheim, Germany). Hyperuricemia was diagnosed when…

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ASYMPTOMATIC HYPERURICEMIA AND RENAL FUNCTION DECLINE IN HYPERTENSIVE SUBJECTS.

2013

Introduction: It is well known that the deposition of uric acid crystals exert direct toxic effect on the renal parenchyma and vasculature. Both experimental and some clinical studies suggest the possibility that an increased uric acid level can lead to kidney disease even without deposition of uric acid crystals. However, other studies yielded conflicting results, especially regarding the role of uric acid in the progression of established kidney disease. Aim: To evaluate retrospectively the relationship between asymptomatic hyperuricemia and renal function decline in non-gouty hypertensive patients. Methods: We enrolled 97 hypertensive subjects, 48 with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) and 4…

Exploration into Uric and Cardiovascular Disease: Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project, A Study Protocol for a Retrospective Observationa…

2018

The relevance of cardiovascular role played by levels of serum uric acid is dramatically growing, especially as cardiovascular risk factor potentially able to exert either a direct deleterious impact or a synergic effect with other cardiovascular risk factors. At the present time, it still remains undefined the threshold level of serum uric acid able to contribute to the cardiovascular risk. Indeed, the available epidemiological case studies are not homogeneous, and some preliminary data suggest that the so-called "cardiovascular threshold limit" may substantially differ from that identified as a cut-off able to trigger the acute gout attack. In such scenario, there is the necessity to clar…

Serum Uric Acid and Kidney Disease Measures Independently Predict Cardiovascular and Total Mortality: The Uric Acid Right for Heart Health (URRAH) Pr…

2021

Background: Serum uric acid predicts the onset and progression of kidney disease, and the occurrence of cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Nevertheless, it is unclear which is the appropriate definition of hyperuricemia in presence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our goal was to study the independent impact of uric acid and CKD on mortality. Methods: We retrospectively investigated 21,963 patients from the URRAH study database. Hyperuricemia was defined on the basis of outcome specific cut-offs separately identified by ROC curves according to eGFR strata. The primary endpoints were cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Results: After a mean follow-up of 9.8 year, there were 1,582 (7.2…
