Chapter 2 Single molecule spectroscopy of multichromophoric dendrimers at room and liquid helium temperatures

2004

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the single molecule spectroscopy of multichromophoric dendrimers at room and liquid helium temperatures. Single molecule spectroscopy has become an important tool for the optical study of the electronic interactions of proximate chromophores as the electronic interactions can be studied without averaging over the properties of an intrinsically heterogeneous ensemble. Single perylenemonoimide (PMI) chromophores are selectively addressed in the frequency domain within spatially isolated multichromophoric dendrimers, which are dispersed in a polymer film. Although the chromophores are interacting, they still can be addressed separately. This feature in …

Preliminary geochemical characterization of gas manifestations in North Macedonia

2020

<p>Like most of the Balkan Peninsula, North Macedonia is a geodynamically active area. As such it has many hydrothermal features and gas manifestations. Until now, no systematic study about the geochemical characterization of the geogenic gases was made before in this country. In August 2019, 24 gas samples were collected in the study area. All, except one collected at Duvalo (soil gas), are gases bubbling or dissolved in thermomineral waters (temperatures from 12 to 66 °C). They were analysed in the laboratory for their chemical (He, Ne, Ar, O2 , N2 , H2</sub&…

Geogenic degassing from active tectonic areas of the Balkan Peninsula

2021

During the last decades, great interest of the scientific community has been addressed to the estimation of geogenic Carbon degassing from tectonically active areas (Tamburello et al., 2018). Due to its high solubility in water, CO2 can be dissolved, transported and released to the atmosphere by groundwater. The quantity released by such process is probably of the same order of magnitude as that directly emitted from active volcanoes. The quantification of this contribution has a substantial implication for the modelling of the global atmospheric carbon cycle. The Balkan peninsula, one of the geodynamically most active regions in Europe, is characterized by intense geogenic degassing. Until…

Tectonothermal Evolution of the Broadly Rifted Zone, Ethiopian Rift

2019

The Broadly Rifted Zone (BRZ) of southern Ethiopia is a long-lived and structurally complex segment of the East African Rift System. However, due to poor surface exposure of early synrift strata and a dearth of subsurface data, the evolution of the BRZ remains poorly understood. We present new apatite (U-Th-Sm)/He and augmented apatite fission track low-temperature thermochronology data from the Beto and Galana basin boundary fault systems to constrain the tectonothermal evolution of the western and eastern BRZ, respectively. Time-temperature reconstructions suggest that East African Rift System-related extension began concurrently across the BRZ in the early Miocene (20–17 Ma), at least 6 …

Helium isotopes and tectonics in southern Italy

1989

Geodynamic evolution of southern Italy can be understood within the framework of the Mediterranean-Alpine System. Subduction of a plate along the Sicily-Calabrian forearc under the Tyrrhenian Sea has been suggested by many geophysicists, although it is not yet confirmed and remains somewhat controversial. Helium isotope ratios provide useful information on the geotectonic structure of the region. The authors report here the {sup 3}H/{sup 4}He ratios of terrestrial gas samples from southern Italy. The observed {sup 3}He/{sup 4}He ratios are relatively high in the Eolian volcanic arc region and low in the other areas. Dichotomous explanations are presented. Firstly, volcanic arc-forearc hypot…

Heat rectification in He II counterflow in radial geometries

2018

Abstract We consider heat rectification in radial flows of turbulent helium II, where heat flux is not described by Fourier's law, but by a more general law. This is different from previous analyses of heat rectification, based on such law. In our simplified analysis we show that the coupling between heat flux and the gradient of vortex line density plays a decisive role in such rectification. Such rectification will be low at low and high values of the heat rate, but it may exhibit a very high value at an intermediate value of the heat rate. In particular, for a given range of values for the incoming heat ow, the outgoing heat flow corresponding to the exchange of internal and external tem…

Vortex dynamics in rotating counterflow and plane Couette and Poiseuille turbulence in superfluid Helium

2008

An equation previously proposed to describe the evolution of vortex line density in rotating counterflow turbulent tangles in superfluid helium is generalized to incorporate nonvanishing barycentric velocity and velocity gradients. Our generalization is compared with an analogous approach proposed by Lipniacki, and with experimental results by Swanson et al. in rotating counterflow, and it is used to evaluate the vortex density in plane Couette and Poiseuille flows of superfluid helium.

Transport and extraction of radioactive ions stopped in superfluid helium

2003

A new approach to convert a high energy beam to a low energy one, which is essential for the next generation radioactive ion beam facilities, has been proposed and tested at Jyvaskyla, Finland. An open Ra-223 alpha-decay-recoil source has been used to produce radioactive ions in superfluid helium. The alpha spectra demonstrate that the recoiling Rn-219 ions have been extracted out of liquid helium. This first observation of the extraction of heavy positive ions across the superfluid helium surface was possible thanks to the high sensitivity of radioactivity detection. An efficiency of 36% was obtained for the ion extraction out of liquid helium. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights res…
