Otite media atelettasica, adesiva, timpanosclerotica: update medico e chirurgico

2011

Otitis media secretive is one of the most common ear diseases characterized by frequent sequelae and complications; in particular the authors describe middle ear atelectasis with pocket retraction of tympanic membrane, pocket retraction limited to pars tensa or to pars flaccida, adhesive otitis media, partial or total myringosclerosis and tympanosclerosis. For each disease the Authors comment the best surgical approaches to preserve and restore conductive hearing loss. As for middle ear atelectasis, adhesive otitis media, myringosclerosis and partial tympanosclerosis it was evidenced a significant hearing gain while in total tympanosclerosis there was an initial hearing improvement in a sho…

Multilayer capsules: a promising microencapsulation system for transplantation of pancreatic islets

2001

In 1980, Lim and Sun introduced a microcapsule coated with an alginate/polylysine complex for encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Characteristic to this type of capsule is, that it consists of a plain membrane which is formed during a single procedural step. With such a simple process it is difficult to obtain instantly a membrane optimized with respect to all the properties requested for islet transplantation. To overcome these difficulties, it is recommended to build up the membrane in several consecutive steps, each optimized for a certain property. In this study, we have analysed such a multilayer microcapsule for the encapsulation of pancreatic islets. Therefore, empty and islet contai…

Long and fluctuating bone fragments in uterine isthmus: a curious feature of true osseous metaplasia.

2013

Osseous metaplasia in the uterine cavity is a rare phenomenon arising from an unusual transformation of non-osseous connective tissue into mature bone. It is unclear how this alteration occurs and it has no single clinical manifestation. We report a case of asymptomatic endometrial osseous metaplasia of the isthmus with a singular picture: numerous long, floating bone-like structures in the cavity. The lesion was treated by operative hysteroscopy. Histological findings described a rare picture of true osseous metaplasia with the extraordinary presence of cells referable to areas of hematopoietic tissue in the cavities of trabecular bone. Physicians should be more informed and alert regardin…

Prospective evaluation of parathyroid graft function after total parathyroidectomy and heterotopic autotransplantation in renal hyperparathyroidism b…

1998

The value of gradients for intact parathyroid hormone (PTH) in the assessment of graft function after total parathyroidectomy/autotransplantation for renal hyperparathyroidism was evaluated in a prospective follow-up study. Altogether 99 patients who underwent operation from August 1, 1987 to December 31, 1996 were prospectively investigated and reexamined postoperatively, including analyses of serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, and intact PTH in the antecubital venous blood of both arms. The postoperative course is known for all patients. Of the 99 patients included in the study, 95 underwent one to nine reexaminations (median three) over follow-up periods of 1 month to 5 years (median 2…
