Si evidenziano alcune caratteristiche strutturali del modo in cui Croce fa storia della filosofia, dandone riscontro in alcune interpretazioni dell'età di Kant proposte dal filosofo. The first half of this essay focuses on the notion of “epoch” in Croce’s philosophy and historiography, attempting to shed some light upon its theoretical feautures. In the second half it has been shown how Croce makes use of this concept in dealing with the aetas kantiana.

This essay analyses certain passages by the 19th century Sicilian historiography on the Spanish vice-reign in the island where the main tendency was the anti-Spanish movement. The joint opinion of the historians, here analyzed, consisted of a great love for their country based on a nostalgic cult of its indipendent reign and its institutions. The latter were a constant reason of consolation compared to the present reality, which seemed very disappointing and awkward if compared with the "mythical" previos ages. Il saggio offre una ricognizione critica degli studi sull’Ordine di Malta pubblicati in Italia negli ultimi cinquant’anni, mettendo in rilievo le connessioni con la storiografia internazionale, quella iberica in particolare. Emerge un quadro di ricerche che, nonostante gli stimolanti temi di indagine e l’interesse delle fonti consultate, sono ancora caratterizzate da un approccio marcatamente settoriale. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the attention of Italian historiography to the Spanish monarchy in the modern age has been a constant in political, social and economic studies. However, until the end of the last century, the attention to the ‘Atlantic dimension’ of the Monarchy was an expression of the interest of individual scholars within a panorama strongly characterized by research on the Mediterranean and European context. Although we do not find in the narrative of the Peloponnesian War an explicit analogy between the phases of human life (more or less distributed) and those of the great political bodies, it remains nevertheless fruitful in my opinion to explore the text in search of clues for biological metaphors. In particular, I will follow the traces left throughout the narrative by three crucial elements: daring (τόλμα), desire (ἔρως), disease (νόσος).
