Current practice in regional anaesthesia in Germany

2005

Several new techniques and agents (e.g. ropivacaine) have been introduced in regional anaesthesia to improve patients outcome and safety. The beneficial effects on patient outcome are clear with these techniques, however, no information is available about their pattern and frequency of use in clinical practice. This study presents data concerning the current practice of regional anaesthesia in Germany.A questionnaire was sent to every German anaesthesia department (n = 1381). Questions focused on the frequency and range of regional anaesthetic procedures employed, with attention also to the organizational structural of the individual institution.Six hundred and sixty-seven questionnaires we…

0437: SYNTAX score is associated with in-hospital mortality as assessed by GRACE risk score in patients with acute myocardial infarction

2014

BackgroundCurrent guidelines for the management of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) recommend the GRACE score for risk stratification with assessment of admission variables. The syntax score (SS) is a comprehensive angiographic scoring system that is derived entirely from the coronary anatomy and lesion characteristics. We investigated the relationship between severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) assessed with SYNTAX Score (SS) and GRACE Score (GS) in patients with AMI.Patients and MethodsFrom the obseRvatoire des Infarctus de Côte d’Or (RICO) survey, 614 consecutive patients hospitalized for an AMI from 1st march 2011 to 30 august 2012 and who underwent coronary angiogr…

Efficacy of the portage early intervention programme ‘growing: birth to three’ for children born prematurely

2020

Findings are presented from a study examining the effects of the home-based intervention ‘Growing: Birth to Three’ (GBT) on children born prematurely at a regional hospital in Norway over a four-year period. Nineteen children received the intervention, while 17 children comprised the control group. Results indicate that GBT had a positive effect on development at 18 months, as measured by the Bayley Scale of Infant Development. However, by 36 months both the intervention and control groups were in the normal range on this measure. A post-test comparison of language performance at 36 months found significantly higher expressive language scores among children in the intervention group on the …

Case Management for Patients with Complex Multimorbidity: Development and Validation of a Coordinated Intervention between Primary and Hospital Care

2017

In the past few years, healthcare systems have been facing a growing demand related to the high prevalence of chronic diseases. Case management programs have emerged as an integrated care approach for the management of chronic disease. Nevertheless, there is little scientific evidence on the impact of using a case management program for patients with complex multimorbidity regarding hospital resource utilisation. We evaluated an integrated case management intervention set up by community-based care at outpatient clinics with nurse case managers from a telemedicine unit. The hypothesis to be tested was whether improved continuity of care resulting from the integration of community-based and …

Organisation of care and initial management of severe head injury in Spain: Results of a national survey

2016

Abstract Objective The main objective of the study is to obtain knowledge about the organisation of care for severe head trauma as well as the initial management of these patients in Neurosurgical Departments in Spain. Material and method A 22-item questionnaire was designed and sent to 59 Neurosurgical Departments. The aim of the questionnaire was to collect data regarding the general profile of the patients with a severe head injury, the general characteristics of the hospitals, the initial care of these patients, the monitoring techniques used, and the measures used to control Intracranial pressure (ICP). Results Of the 59 Neurosurgical Departments identified, 29 (49.2%) completed the qu…

Smoking in hospitalized patients. A great opportunity

2022

The objective of this study is to describe the characteristics of smokers admitted to different medical and surgical services in a university hospital and the perception of patients regarding the need for a specialized intervention. The sample comprises a total of 307 patients (mean age of 59.4 years), being 40% (n = 123) non-smokers, 42.7% (n = 131) ex-smokers, and 17.3% (n = 53) smokers. The average consumption of smokers was 22.2 cigarettes / day and the severity of nicotine dependence evaluated with the Fagerstrom test exceeded 5 points in more than half of the sample. On the other hand, 77.7% had made at least one previous attempt to quit tobacco use. Almost the entire sample (89.9 %) …

Der Einsatz der Tumorprothese bei sekundär-neoplastischer Destruktion des proximalen Femurendes

2008

Total hip arthroplasty was performed with PMMA-augmented tumor prostheses in 42 individuals suffering from metastatic destruction of the proximal end of the femur at the Orthopedic University Hospital Mainz from 1980 to 1992. Neoplastic lesions had been triggered by carcinomas of the breast in 25 female patients. 24 of our patients presented with pathologic fractures. In all patients capable of walking preoperatively early mobilization could be attained by total hip arthroplasty. Pain relief was achieved in each patient. Resection of the major trochanter and, partially, of the pelvitrochanteric muscle sleeve entailed luxation of the prosthesis six times in 5 individuals during the first pos…

Weight loss in Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies: Impact on mortality and hospitalization by dementia subtype

2021

Objectives Loss of weight is associated with cognitive decline as well as several adverse outcomes in dementia. The aim of this study was to assess whether weight loss is associated with mortality and hospitalization in dementia subtypes. Methods A cohort of 11,607 patients with dementia in Alzheimer's disease (AD), vascular dementia (VD), or dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) was assembled from a large dementia care health records database in Southeast London. A natural language processing algorithm was developed to established whether loss of weight was recorded around the time of dementia diagnosis. Cox proportional hazard models were applied to examine the associations of reported weight l…

Kidney Disease Management in the Hospital Setting: A Focus on Inappropriate Drug Prescriptions in Older Patients

2021

Aging with multimorbidity and polytherapy are the most significant factors that could led to inappropriate prescribing of contraindicated medications in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this study was to evaluate the prescriptions of contraindicated drugs in older adults in CKD and to identify their associated factors in a hospital context. An observational retrospective study was carried out considering all patients ≥65 years with at least one serum creatinine value recorded into the REPOSI register into 2010–2016 period. The estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was applied to identify CKD. A descriptive analysis was performed to compare demographic and clinica…
