Sulodexide versus calcium heparin in the medium-term treatment of deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs.

1997

Thirty adult patients with distal, monolateral deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs were randomly treated for sixty days either with subcutaneous Ca-Heparin or with Sulodexide, administered IM for ten days and orally for fifty days. The thrombus accretion above the knee, the venous pressures of the affected leg, the clinical sympto matology, and some laboratory coagulative tests were monitored throughout the admin istration period. Local tolerability of the two treatments was also evaluated. The two applied treatments evidenced a net antithrombotic activity, preventing thrombus accretion above the knee, improving with the same efficacy the venous pressures in the affected legs, and simila…

Five-year retrospective italian multicenter study of visceral leishmaniasis treatment.

2014

ABSTRACT The treatment of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is poorly standardized in Italy in spite of the existing evidence. All consecutive patients with VL admitted at 15 Italian centers as inpatients or outpatients between January 2004 and December 2008 were retrospectively considered; outcome data at 1 year after treatment were obtained for all but 1 patient. Demographic characteristics, underlying diseases, diagnostic procedures, treatment regimens and outcomes, as well as side effects were recorded. A confirmed diagnosis of VL was reported for 166 patients: 120 (72.3%) immunocompetent, 21 (12.6%) patients with immune deficiencies other than HIV infection, and 25 (15.1%) coinfected with HI…

Selective activation of shoulder, trunk, and arm muscles: A comparative analysis of different push-up variants

2015

Context The push-up is a widely used exercise for upper limb strengthening that can be performed with many variants. A comprehensive analysis of muscle activation during the ascendant phase (AP) and descendant phase (DP) in different variants could be useful for trainers and rehabilitators. Objective To obtain information on the effect of different push-up variants on the electromyography (EMG) of a large sample of upper limb muscles and to investigate the role of the trunk and abdomen muscles during the AP and DP. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting University laboratory. Patients or Other Participants Eight healthy, young volunteers without a history of upper extremity or spine injury.…

Total body skin examination for skin cancer screening in patients with focused complaints

2012

Background. The value of total body skin examination (TBSE) for skin cancer screening is controversial. Objective: We sought to determine whether TBSE could be helpful in patients with focused skin symptoms who would not otherwise have undergone TBSE. Methods: In a prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study consecutive adult patients were recruited during a period of 18 months. Physicians first inspected, problem areas and uncovered areas and then performed TBSE. Equivocal lesions detected in both steps were excised or biopsied. Primary outcomes were the absolute and relative risks of missing skin cancer and the number of patients needed to examine to detect melanoma or another maligna…

Aligning personal and collective interests in emerging adults during the COVID-19 emergency in Italy

2021

This study investigated the relations of emerging adults' personal (civic competence and interdependent self-construal) and community-based (sense of community and civic engagement) resources as predictors of appraisal of COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) and attitudes toward preventing contagion in Italy. Participants were 2873 Italian emerging adults (71% females) aged 19-30 years (M = 22.67, SD = 2.82). Structural equation modeling revealed both direct and indirect positive associations among study variables. Civic competence and interdependent self-construal were related to sense of community and civic engagement behavior which, in turn, predicted appraisal of PHEM. App…

Strength and Latency of the HP-SAP Closed Loop Variability Interactions in Subjects Prone to Develop Postural Syncope

2019

The coupling and latency between heart period (HP) and systolic arterial pressure (SAP) variability can be investigated along the two arms of the HP-SAP closed loop, namely along the baroreflex feedback from SAP to HP, and along the feedforward pathway from HP to SAP. This study investigates the HP-SAP closed loop variability interactions through cross-correlation function (CCF). Coupling strength and delay between HP and SAP variability series were monitored in 13 subjects prone to develop orthostatic syncope (SYNC, 28±9 yrs, 5 males) and in 13 subjects with no history of postural syncope (noSYNC, age: 27±8 yrs, 5 males). Analysis was carried out at rest in supine position (REST) and durin…

Lack of association of the -463 G/A myeloperoxidase promoter polymorphism with Behcet's disease in Italian patients.

2007

Objective. To investigate potential associations between the 463G/A myeloperoxidase (MPO) promoter polymorphism and susceptibility to, and clinical expression of, Behcet's disease (BD). Methods. One hundred and seventy-five Italian patients who satisfied the International Study Group criteria for BD and 235 healthy age- and sex-matched blood donors were genotyped for the 463G/A promoter polymorphism of the MPO gene by molecular methods. The patients were subgrouped according to the presence or absence of clinical manifestations. Results. The distribution of allele and genotype frequencies of the MPO 463A/G polymorphism did not differ significantly between the BD patients and the healthy…

Predictive factors of overall functioning improvement in patients with chronic schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder treated with paliperidone p…

2018

BACKGROUND Long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics can improve medication adherence and reduce hospitalisation rates compared with oral treatments. Paliperidone palmitate (PAL) and aripiprazole monohydrate (ARI) LAI treatments were associated with improvements in global functioning in patients with schizophrenia. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the predictive factors of better overall functioning in patients with chronic schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder treated with PAL and ARI. METHOD Enrolled were 143 (97 males, 46 females, mean age 38.24 years, SD = 12.65) patients with a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, whom we allocated in two gr…

Insight into epileptic and physiological déjà vu: from a multicentric cohort study

2019

Background and purpose The presence of a continuum between physiological deja vu (DV) and epileptic DV is still not known as well as epidemiological data in the Italian population. The aim was to identify the epidemiological distribution of DV in Italy, and secondly to look for specific features of DV able to discriminate between epileptic and non-epileptic DV. Methods In all, 1000 individuals, 543 healthy controls (C) (313 women; age 40 ± 15 years) and 457 patients with epilepsy (E) (260 women; age 39 ± 14 years), were prospectively recruited from 10 outpatient neurological clinics throughout Italy. All populations were screened using the Italian Inventory for Deja Vu Experiences Assessmen…

Stent-assisted detachable coil embolization of wide-necked renal artery aneurysms

2017

Renal artery aneurysms (RAAs) are rare with an estimated incidence of 0.1% in the general population, and they represent approximately 25% of all visceral aneurysms. The gold standard of treatment is open surgery, but it is associated with a high risk of nephrectomy, mortality, and morbidity. Less invasive endovascular therapies are becoming increasingly common for the treatment of RAAs. Here, we aimed to report three cases of wide-necked complex renal artery aneurysms treated endovascularly using stent-assisted coil embolization with self-expandable stent nitinol Solitaire AB and Concerto Axium coils. In addition, we describe the use of the waffle-cone technique in a case of wide-necked sa…
