The growing number of projcts for floating structures or artificial islands in response to the problems of urhan congestion or environmental emergency requires a critical reflection on the prospectives and the risks implied in this new trend of urban water colonization. This paper intends to test the hypothesis thaht the value of a new and emerging issue of Architecrure can be recognized to this trend and, trhrough a comparison with a series of experiences, wants to bring to the attention of the debate a number of questions which, for exigency of synthesis, analyze in particular the morpholinguistic issues re1ated to the diffusion of this new architecture theme.

A new approach for geological faults detection

This paper will introduce a new approach, mainly based on wavelets transform and mathematical morphology, for the detection of geological faults in satellite and aerial photos. This can be useful for territorial analysis, digital cartography and the use of geographical information systems. The proposed method is fast enough and unsupervised. Different techniques will be compared and some examples on real data will be presented to indicate the applicability of these methods.

The mechanically based non-local elasticity: an overview of main results and future challenges

The mechanically based non-local elasticity has been used, recently, in wider and wider engineering applications involving small-size devices and/or materials with marked microstructures. The key feature of the model involves the presence of non-local effects as additional body forces acting on material masses and depending on their relative displacements. An overview of the main results of the theory is reported in this paper.

International audience; We present an automatic method for measuring the tone response curve of display devices based on visual methods, where the eye is replaced by an end-user, uncalibrated camera, such as a webcam. Our approach compares a series of halftoned patches of known covering ratio with a continuous series of tone patches for each ratio. Both patches are shot by a camera that is used as a virtual eye to evaluate the luminance difference. By an iterative process, the continuous tone value is adjusted while compared with the perceived level of the halftoned patch. Welded section defence by LRPD devices

The present paper concerns a special application of some recently proposed structural devices, called LRPD, able to protect the welded sections of frame steel structures from undesired brittle collapse ensuring the good expected ductile behaviour. Standard I-shaped cross-sections are treated, and the proposed devices are suitably considered as moment resisting connections between beams and columns.
